Diamond Spray on Laptop Strop?

I have the Latigo Leather bench strop (mounted on wood, about 3" wide and 10" long) from Star Shaving. I don't use it as I prefer the Big Mama hanging strop. So, I was thinking of buying a diamond spray to use on it but didn't know if leather is good to use with diamond spray and if it is, whether to go with 1.0 or 0.5 micron.

I currently use lapping film to 1 micron and then CrOx on balsa wood (also laptop hone from Star Shaving). Would my progression be from the lapping film to the diamond strop then the CrOx?

Just trying to make use of the leather benchtop strop rather than have it sit around. Thanks.

I would use the diamond on balsa first. When you decide on what you like then commit that leather to it.

Which micron size depends a lot on your hone progression and what you are looking for from the sprays.

I have settled on .1 and .05 CBN on hanging leather for both touchups and final finishing after a Jnat. .1 and .05 is pretty small, and depending on what you are finishing on, it may not have much effect.

Edit: I just realized you are on lapping film to 1 micron. How are the edges now?

I'm just starting with my honing - have done 3 so far. After the 1 micron I use the CrOx on balsa. Its sharp, but the first shave seems "harsh", then settles down into a more comfortable sharp - if that makes sense. I guess my goal is if I can maintain the edge going to diamond spray on leather then CrOx on balsa and in this way delay the need to go to film. My other thought is to invest in a coticule and simply use it with water as a finishing step and in this way perhaps avoid that "harsh" edge feel. Plus, I would gain experience in using the coticule.

Thanks for your comments.

I tried to use diamond spray on a piece of latigo and it did take to well. After a bit of reading it seems a diamond paste is a better medium for leather.

I use .5 diamond on hard felt.

I you would like my opinion for what its worth, you can, with great success, 0.5uM on your leather bench strop and as I have used diamond spray on latigo before I can say it should work very well for you!! IMHO though.

Have a go at it and let us know what your impressions are after you touch up your 1st razor with it.

Keep up the good work, tinkersd.

Diamond feels very harsh on my skin. I prefer CBN instead. I think a .5 or .25 might work well to smooth out the edge a bit and refine it.

On the otherhand a sharp edge will feel harsh if you use too much pressure or have a subpar lather, so stropping on a finer abrasive may exacerbate the harshness too if your technique favors a less keen edge. YMMV of course.
