Deodorant question

Wasn't sure if this was the place to post it but here goes.

I have had allergies to most deodorants ever since I can remember. I love the smell of deodorants like Old Spice but upon contact my arms begin to burn like they are on fire. I use Old Spice as an example because this seems to be the one that really has the worst effect on my arms. If I don't clean it off immeditalely it will literally start burning my skin off. Starts to look all chapped. Never did the old spice again; however, this is the not the only deodorant that does this. Many of the readily available ones do.

I found some of the gel deodorants and the Old spice that comes up as a gel powder seems to be okay as far as no burning is concerned BUT since they contain alum (and are therefore anti-perspirants) my under arms swell a bit. I have dealt with this FOREVER. I recently heard good things about Tom's of Maine products. Picked up 2 from the store. Last night I had to wash one off because it started to burn and irritate my arms. I'm wearing the other right now even though it tingles a bit. They also don't have any lasting power at all.

I'm at a loss for what to try next. I need a deodorant that does NOT have aluminum and allows me to sweat but that doesn't burn my arms off and that has some lasting power.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as this is becoming seriously difficult to deal with. Anyone out there have these problems? For what it's worth I THINK I may be having a reaction to the actual bar itself. I don't know what its made of but it appear that the gels don't effect me at all. Only problem is they have aluminum.

Try toms of Maine I think they leave out some of the ingredients that most deodorants have that causes irritation.

I just recently purchased Toms of Maine (two different formulas) and I still get the burns and they have no lasting power.

Try the Arm and Hammer Naturals line.

I was actually just looking into this brand this morning. I'm thinking about it the only thing that I'm worried about is that it looks like it contains a white stick and those always get thw white powdery stuff stuck on my hairs and are hard to get off in the shower. I have the worst luck with sticks I rather just stay clear away from them if possible.

I have the same problem and had to go to Crystal Body Deodorant
They have a few different products and 1 might be what your looking for.
Solved my problem and I hope it works for you as well.

I'd suggest a PM to either Sue or Wendy. These ladies know their stuff about skin care and can likely help you towards a solution.

Well, good luck dude. There have been a number of threads on this though. I use Almay and Mitchum Senstive gels (which both contain aluminum) but they are both antiperspirants. I also use the A&H Naturals, but I cannot use it for multiple days in a row. There are a lot of natural deoderant options out there. You may try the Crystal Stick and see if that works for you - it is not effective for me.

Seriously, I actually feel like there aren't many options left for me. This is probably the reason why I just dealt with the swelling from the alum based anti-perspirants. I guess my last attempt will be the Crystal Rock. If that doesn't work I guess I'll just have to deal with the minor swlling I get from AP.

Yep forgot to mention the lack of power. I guess it works for me because I'm not a very heavy sweater.

I did mention it...in the third paragraph last sentence. The funny thing is I'm not really a heavy sweater either. Towards the end of the day around 6pm is when I can start smelling something brewing under my arms. Not like a knock you on your *** type of smell but a smell nonetheless. I don't like to smell. It's against my religion or something.

I've been using the JASON naturally fresh for men lately. Its been a great alternative to the rather pricey MenScience and Anthony Logistics deodorants I used in the past. The JASON deo is about as gentle as you can get; no parabens, no alcohol, no artificial fragrance, and no propylene glycol. Instead it has a clean fresh scent provided by corn starch, and has natural anti-bacterial properties thanks to green tea.

If you haven't, you might want to take a look at my posting here at B&B about it. It has very mild ingredients, and you only have to put it on about once a week (my mileage is 9 days between applications). You still sweat, but because it kills the bacteria which cause the odor, you don't smell at all. It is a bit pricey, but a small container lasts >6 months for me.

If you're interested, try Googling it on the web for more information and prices. I can say that it's the only thing that I've used for more than 20 years, and I have turned on a lot of people to it and they're all very glad I did.

+1 to the Crystal Deodorant. Works great. Natural salts, none of the "modern" ingredients that can cause irritation...

Give it a shot. Walgreens sells it.

Another +1 on this stuff. I recently developed irritation to deodorants and went through 3-5 different types before using this. Theres a cleaner feeling in the area and I just use a body spray of choice for some scent.

I think you'll have good luck with the deodorant that Burt's Bees puts out. It's an all natural product that I find works, smells great, is inexpensive to use. I've been using it for a few years now. It's easiest to find in health food places.

No matter what i couldn't find a deodorant that i liked. So i eventually made my own and it works so well:flowers:

I dissolve a chunk of the crystal deodorant in hot water... making sure not to super-saturate it so that it doesn't create crystals later. And i added a good splash of Rose-Water.

I have a really good atomizer from the Fresh store - an empty bottle of cologne. I pour my deoderant in there and it works really great.

I can sweat now without something gross and sticky under my arm.. and i really love the way I smell so I'm not crazy about using sticky, waxy, antiperspirants. But the salt prevents any excess of the bacteria that causes odor.. so i smell like myself, and never dank or overpowering.

Okay so I purchased the crystal rock from Walgreens today. It's the one that comes in a roll-up container.

I just finished taking a shower and applied it under my arms. It was kind of strange. It felt like I didn't even apply anything at all. I can't even sniff to see if I got any on because it is unscented.

Anyhow, now the trial begins...It passed if I have no burning sensations and no smell.

My fingers are crossed.
