DE Duplicates

I've got a newly acquired case of RAD and the symptoms are showing. Do you guys that have been buying DEs for a while buy duplicates of razors? Buying something that you already have that's in better condition is one thing, but will you pick up a razor in similar condition just because it's there? I got lucky and found a nice Fatboy early on, but every time I see one available at a good price in like condition, I consider buying it while the opportunity presents itself. Is there rehab for this? :a23:

The answer is yes buy up good deals when you come across them. Followed up with hosting local get together's and sharing the wealth, or helping get someone started in this little healthy obsession we have.

I do that. I buy one to use and collect, and if one in better shape comes along I'll buy it too and move out the old one. I'd rather have a rare razor that may have some minor blemishes in my collection over not having one at all. Just how I look at it.

Who me?!?!?!?! I am the guy that had 4 progress razors at one time (most of them customs).

I "try" not to buy more than one of any single type of razor and lately I have been pretty good about it.

I think it is something that you do when you first start out but eventually "grow out of it"

Now I do have a 37c and 39c slant but they are not "technically" the same razor (one is the HD the other the barber poll) even though they have the same head.

I may suffer from all kinds of acquisition disorders but I'm no hoarder. I fight the urge to buy duplicates, especially difficult when the price is a real bargain (and not just shavers - I am talking creams, A/S, soaps, blades, etc), by telling myself that I should leave it for one of my B&B brothers who does not yet have that item. I must admit though, that I have quite a few shavers in every color, i.e., Fatboy, Old Style, Futur, slant, Slim, in both silver (or chrome or nickle as the case may be) as well as the gold version. I even have both a rhodium and a gold Aristocrat. I do not consider these to be duplicates.

I try to avoid it, and I do a pretty good job. I did pick up another Slim, but it was only $5. How do you pass that up? I thought about getting rid of my first, less pretty Slim, but I decided to try to trade the new one for something else.

The one thing I never did was buy duplicates, with that being said I did have a silver and gold version of several different types of razors. I sold the gold and decided to collect just nickel and silver versions. The only razor I have a duplicate of is a Schick adjustable injector. I think they are going to get more difficult and expensive to find so I have a spare.

No rehab possible...

It's even worse with fountain pens as the excuse is along the lines of "Well, I could need to replace the feed on the one I really love, so I'll keep this one too." In that world, it seems that the parts assembled into a pen were whatever the workers happened to have on the shelf that day. There are also stories I have heard of people that would walk around with just the cap of a Parker 51 in their pocket, as owning the whole pen was outside of their reach.

That's what tempts me, the good deals, especially if I find them in the wild. In that case, I almost feel like it's my responsibility to rescue them, if only to find them a better home.

The only duplicate I bought was a Fatip, back when they were much more difficult to find. I just picked up a 2013 R41 to compare with my 2011, but those are different razors :wink2:

I suppose if I had a razor that was head and shoulders above everything else I had in the arsenal, I might pick up a backup to be safe.

I have multiples of several razors. birthday slims I have 4 or 5, I have a distant dream of getting them replated in various metals. I have a few fatties, four or so g-bars, about four Hoffritz slants in varying condition (I shave with the rattiest looking one), a couple of toggles and some accidental duplicates from bulk buys. I probably have 50 razors (or more, haven't done a count in a while) and plan on selling some of them at some stage but deep down I know I probably won't.

I call it "Shopping for Others."

If I see a good deal at an antique store or flea market, I buy it. If it's something I already have I and don't want another, I pass it on to another member of the forums for a good deal. I consider it a responsibility to my fellow members (in hopes that they do the same) and a benefit of "being in the club."

duplicates? who, me?
