What's new

Darwins are going up.

They are quite rare and the price reflects this, I suppose.

The head looks similar to the Eclipse.

Best wishes

They are IMHO the most beautiful DE ever made. Darwin also made a very nice razor set similar to the Rolls.

Hi Guys,

Did any of you get this one? I really wanted a Darwin to add to my English Razor collection, but WOW over £300 - too rich for me.

Lovely example though:

Supply and Demand, Supply and Demand.....

Best wishes

My husband and I both have birthdays this month, so to celebrate we went razor crazy........... a "TOGGLE" for him

....... and for me a beautiful, gorgeous, near perfect, did I say beautiful? "DARWIN" DE with leather case. :w00t:

I feel like gollum with his precious... I luvs my "DARWIN" :001_wub: or I will when it gets here from England.

As proof that we really went razor crazy we also got his and hers "Feather" all stainless razors (one Japanese version with stand and one American version with box). We luv them too. :001_wub:

I plead guilty! But I'm not feeling it. :001_smile

That is crazy! Did it go for that price because of the leather case included? I would imagine that will add quite a bit to the price, but I just won my second darwin about a week ago for $20 shipped. The first one I got for a similar price, though it came in a lot that you couldn't even tell what it was in the picture.

I was watching that Darwin too but my heart was being tugged in 2 different directions.. for it and for an Eclipse Red Ring. Didn't win either one of them.. such is my luck.

Wow. That one was in amazing condition, especially the case.
Congrats, Intrigued!
These razors have such wild handles!

Thank you! I've never seen a razor I liked as much as that one. As soon as I saw it I knew the Darwin would be my "holy grail", a must have. I like everything about them from the handle to the "Darwin" embossed on the head along with the engraved registration no. and the solid cobalt steel construction.
As to the o.p. I don't know if the prices are going up. I just knew that I might never get another chance at one in such amazing condition so I played to win. :001_smile

Besides how can you not love a razor that calls himself Darwin?

Congratulations from me as well. I have a Darwin, it's a different model, but very similar to yours. It's an aggressive but very smooth shaver. It shaves very comparably to a slant. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine.

They made five double edge models I believe.. This particular one sold in the auction was a Darwin Deluxe. There was also a women's version of it called the Darwin Bijou, which came with the same art deco handle or a generic knurled handle similar to a 1940's Gillette Super Speed - but was much smaller and took a smaller, non-standard DE blade. They also had another men's model with the same art deco handle, called the Standard. Only difference in the Deluxe and the Standard was the case they came in. The other two DE razors made by Darwin were the Miracol which had a fluted plastic handle and the Popular Model which was a Gillette type 2-piece with a knurled handle and chromium plated, both for men. They also made a Rolls Razor-type single edge I believe.

Don't own one but here are some pictures of the DeLuxe.

Darwin - Stainless Steel De-Luxe - Gillette type - England 1933 Double edge Darwins Ltd., Fitzwilliam Works, Sheffield British Reg.d No. R.D. 710725

The British Registry Mark of 710725 clearly places it as 1925.

. . .

1923: 694999
1924: 702671
1925: 710165
1926: 718057
1927: 726330
1928: 734370

. . .

Okay, I need paid overtime for this. England had two forms of registration, the patent and the registration mark. British Patent No. 243,881 also puts it in 1925. Two ways to ID the same date.

1923 GB190732
1924 GB208751
1925 GB226571
1926 GB244801
1927 GB263501
1928 GB282701
1929 GB302941

I still have it. As others mentioned, it's a fairly aggressive razor....you need to be on your game to load this thing up and shave.
Mine doesn't have any kind of patent number; it's just got the "Darwin" logo on the head, and has a DARWINS LTD SHEFFIELD ENGLAND at the bottom of the handle.

I think I'll use it in the AM......

Here's another photo of it.

A beauty. It's a bit different than the one AsylumGuido posted, and given that it doesn't have a patent number it seems a bit different than the one on the 'bay. It looks like there are at least three versions of this razor out there.

Is yours stainless steel like the one that AsylumGuido posted about?

hi all
ok quick question , if the darwin has no date on it ,when did they stop putting a date on ? the one i have has no date only .stamped darwin ltd sheffied,on one side ,the other side patent cobalt. ?? the markings are under the head , the box it came in is black underneath and a blue top , looks like bakelite?
thanks rac

There seem to be more differences then just the box. Now I wonder how many version there are. :001_smile

Thanks very much for that information, I didn't know any of this. Mine came in a black and blue bakelite like box. The handle looks to be the same as the Deluxe but the head is a bit different. Only the centre post comes through the top and the two side posts come through the bottom. It has the word "Darwin" and a patent number that identifies it as a 1925 model. I wonder if mine is a "Standard" compared to the leather boxed one which appears to be the "Deluxe".

My razor is exactly like the one pictured here:

Yes, the one in the bakelite box is the Darwin Standard.
