What's new

Dapper Autumn 2012

For what it is worth:

About a month ago myself and a friend realized that we both get a subscription to GQ. That got us on a roller coaster of topics, but what we kept coming back to was that neither one of us could afford any of the clothes in the magazine. That got us to talking about fashion and style and we decided that style doesn't have to be expensive: it is part effort, part confidence, and willingness to try new things.

Anyway....

We decided that we were going to end the last part of the year in style. We declared October 1st the start of Dapper Autumn 2012. The goal is to make a pledge to try and take care of yourself and your style for the last three months of the year.

I thought everyone on here might be interested, so I wanted to pass this along.

Great pledge, congratulations!

Nothing wrong with looking to GQ for ideas but for the most part the designer clothing inside is out of the price range of most people, not just you and your friend. Not to mention, a good deal of the designer clothing is tweaked with just enough trendiness rather than classic styling to make it look ridiculous in a year or so.

Start out with a clothing company known for more traditional classic clothing like Land's End or Brooks Brothers for example and google "how to build a men's wardrobe" for some great ideas on how to get started.

You can buy a 100% cashmere sweater from a designer label like Hermes for $1,175.00 or a dress shirt for $680.00 vs Land's End $200.00 for Cashmere Sweater/$75.00 for Merino Wool Sweater/$60.00 dress shirt or even Brooks Brothers $90.00 dress shirt/$400.00 Cashmere Sweater/$100.00 Merino Wool Sweater.

I wouldn't turn down a gift of Hermes clothing but there is no way I would ever spend my own money for it just because of the label.

If you are young enough you can certainly pull off some of the more trendy styles like pants that are too short or bright color belts with dress pants (ugghh :scared:) but it's money down the drain next year when nobody else is doing it and you have a wardrobe full of short pants and bright belts :w00t:

Nothing wrong with looking to GQ for ideas but ...

... remember, GQ needs to fill a magasine with "new" and interesting stuff 10 times a year ... and there's only so many times you can recommend the tried & true classics before everyone realises they can stop buying new magasines and just read the old ones.

So ... novelty is the name of the game.

But reading GQ is better than staying completely in the dark, and they do tend to have photos of attractive young ladies, so it's not all bad.

I highly support Dapper Autumn. I also highly suggest checking out the Magnificent Bastard. It's a great blog about timeless, classic, and affordable style for the modern man. It really well written and doesn't take himself too seriously. I've learned a lot reading it.

... and they are dead wrong about linen. They'll figure it out someday.
