Damsel in Distress...

Hey Everyone,
I am shamelessly submitting myself to your mercy. Please Help Me!
My boyfriend's birthday is in 2 weeks and I'm at a complete loss at what to get him. He has a great love of safety razors and brushes and soaps and is in these forums about 20 times a day, but I know nothing about any of this. I use pink disposable razors, and soaps I steal from my moms bathroom. He has fine leather shoes and I wear flip flops. He has J. Crew vests and knit ties, Ive got ripped jeans and over sized sweatshirts. He sips Knob creek while I go through a bottle of peach 'champagne'...straight from the bottle. But I love him, like the flowers reach for the sun I love him. He is the happiest, best and most loving person I know. I am so lucky to have him in my life.

And I want to thank him for everything he does for me. Unfortunately his birthday is the same day I leave for 12 weeks (Army Training) and this will be the longest time we've ever been apart. I want to get him something that he'll use and think of me, something nice that he'll appreciate, something perfect. Im asking for suggestions. He's made many friends on here, and I suspect that everyone here's tastes will be more analogous with his than mine are. They dont just have to be shaving suggestions, though I greatly appreciate any help there since I am completely in the dark, but I'm open to all sorts of suggestions.

Thank you so much for any help you can give me.

Very Very Gratefully,
K.

The time spent shaving is a great time for reflection and relaxation. On here, guys talk a lot about their "shave dens": the place where they spend that 20 minutes or more each day, staring at themselves in the mirror, trying (sometimes in vain) to improve the mug staring back at them.

My suggestion: Be there with him every day while he goes through this routine. Put some photos of yourself, and the two of you together, around this area, with a portrait of your loving face next/on the mirror so he can reflect fondly of you.

Make a CD for him to listen to while he spends his 20 minutes or more reflecting. Please, don't make it too sappy, just good music that puts a smile inside your heart. Maybe include little snippets of your voice interspersed throughout the CD, "I love you sweet heart", and "Good morning, sunshine". Better yet, make 5 of these CD's and load them into a player set on random, dedicated to the bathroom; listening will become part of the routine - it should be something that puts a spring in his step.

whatcha think?

danek is on the right track ...

MAKING a gift that will remind him of YOU will be a lot more meaningful than buying him the finest soaps or creams or brushes.

It would be helpful to know what he already has. Oh, and your quest is sweet and all that stuff.

Agreed...somehow we need to know what he has before we can recommend what you should get him and also your budget. I think it would be easiest to recommend soaps, after shaves and eau de toilets to maybe match what he already has. Brushes and Razors are much more subjective but if that's what you want to buy him we can help you make that choice too. A personalised brush or razor would be very nice but again depends in your budget.

Is he into vintage safety razors? If you, you could get him one of the nice collectible ones, like a Gillette Aristocrat....

Oh, and I dont really have a budget, money isn't an issue. If there's a a Holy Grail of Shaving than I am Galahad, or Percival.

has he ever shown an interest in straight razors...you could get him a nice razor and a strop from straightrazordesigns.com and he could begin to learn while you are away. Just a thought.

He doesn't have a '40's style SuperSpeed, unless the '53 is an old style. Get's complicated sometimes. Or a Fatboy, but I say all this 'cause I like razors. But maybe he has enough razors. Yeah, like you could. Maybe a scent you really like on him. On the other hand I kind of like the idea of a str8.

Here is my nickel: He seems to have more creams, but none of his creams and aftershave are the real high end. I would get him a very high end cream and aftershave balm or splash so that he only thinks of you when he smells that scent. The difficulty is trying to find a scent that you know he will like. I would suggest going to the Penhaligon's website and look at the descriptions and settle on something that is the same family as what he likes, citrus, oriental, whatever. In all of my sampling, Penhaligon's had the most complex and exotic, while masculine scents. Then you can probably find it at one of the many US vendors for quicker delivery.

Another high end cream I'm sure he would enjoy is Acqua di Parma. It is the epitome of luxury and is package royally. You can not go wrong with this gift if you are catering to a wet shaver.

I second the suggestions for

Aqua di parma
A straight rozor setup
The romantic bit of a pic and music.

Get him a puck of Penhaligons English Fern in a wodden bowl from here: http://www.vintagebladesllc.com/vshop/xcart/product.php?productid=820&cat=137&page=1
This is about the only place left that still has the stuff as it's being replaced with a new formulation. THIS IS THE HOLY GRAIL OF SOAPS he will love it and you for getting it for him!

I'll second this plan of going top shelf.

Ulysses?
Is this the guy? Looks like a pretty good hint to me ;)

Looks like you're busted. That was probably a little too exact to be just anyone.
