Check the packaging for country of origin. USA = Gem/Personna/ASR, Korea = Dorco. Those are the only 2 companies doing store-branded SE blades that I know of.
The CVS-branded "009 RD" are the ASR-made un-coated carbon steel blades.
The number denotes the thickness (.009") and "RD" is thought to stand for 'regular duty'.
They are nice and sharp. Very sharp. They last for a while too and respond well to palm- or pants-stropping. The downside is that they will rust if left unattended and damp.
The CVS (Consumer Value Stores) blades are made by The American Safety Razor Company, One Razor Blade Lane, in the fair city of Verona, VA 24482. They are the only American manufacturer of SE razor blades nowadays that I am aware of. In fact, I shaved with a CVS blade this morning, using my Gem Damaskeene. An outstanding shave, very close and very comfortable.
The 009RD code is factory manufacturing jargon that essentially is meaningless to the average consumer. Don't worry about it, as I'm not aware of other options for you to choose from. What is, is.
Excellent blades, but keep 'em dry, and they are carbon steel and prone to rust. I suggest you remove the blade after each shave and blot it and the razor dry with a paper towel.
They are about the only SE blades you will come across, unless you happen on a package of stainless ASR blades. Some pharmacies carry the stainless blades so look at all you come across, you might get lucky and find another type of blade to use locally,
Another great shave with a CVS SE. It was 4th on same blade and looks Like it will go a few more. Today was ER 1924 razor, I have been putting this blade through my MMOC, 1924, GEM Jr... All have been smooth and no issues close shaves. When i am done with shave I remove dry the blade and pop into an air tight bottle(empty prescription bottle) with a desiccant canister from the pharmacy. Ask your local they toss dozens of them away everyday when they open new Pill bottles before they distribute to customers.
The CVS blades are my travel blade. TSA takes a dim view of single edge blades in a carry-on bag, and there always seems to be a CVS drug store between the airport and my hotel, no matter where I am.
Rust is not an issue since I use the blade once and toss it as soon as I'm done. Most of my trips are only a few days duration so I end up leaving half a half package or more in the room when I leave.
They're actually pretty decent blades - very sharp.
