Cutting your own hair

Hey guys,

Long time without posting but I started cutting my own hair recently and I thought this would be something everyone here at BB would enjoy. My hairstyle has been the "ivy league" for a good many years. Nothing too complicated so do-it-yourself obviously won't work for everyone but I have watched it done enough times that I aced it on my first try. Why would you even attempt something so dangerous you might ask? The reasons are many as my hair grows fast, I like a fresh haircut, the cost, the hassle an at the end of the day who is more invested in the way you look but you? Nobody.

So after a particularly bad cut from a well respected barber shop (that gives straight razor shaves) I decided it was time to take matters into my own hands. After all I already had a wahl trimer with all of the attachments so why not.

The first cut was good. I made a huge mess in the bathroom and I learned a lot about cutting my own hair. Nobody could tell I did it myself and I got plenty of compliments the next day. My bathroom has a good sized mirror and a medicine cabinet with a mirrored door so I could see the back of my head. I suggest taking your time an going a little long the first go. Scissors over fingers works well for blending and I like to clean up the uneven parts in the shower when my hair is wet.

I suggest anyone thinking of cutting their own hair should go for it! I cut my hair once a week, always look sharp now, and the best part it's free and fun! Kinda like wet shaving. If you're still unsure there are a few good videos on YouTube. Good luck and share your results!!

A few years ago after an accident involving my usual haircut, I shaved my head. I enjoyed the low maintenance so much that For the last few years I have just buzzed myself with a #1 guard every so often. Did it this morning, in fact. A good set of clippers from Sally Supply a few years back has set me up pretty good, and I have saved a ton of time, money and hassle since.

I cut my own hair and have SWMBO check me for missed spots. I just use clippers with no guard, I like short hair mostly because I'm going very thin up top and it looks better shorter.

My wife does my hair with clippers (no guard). I spent the money I save on razors, soaps, etc. A $14 clippers from Target serves me just fine.

Been clipping my own for a year or so. Wahl clippers. #2 on the sides and back, 1 on the top, then a little 1.5 on the sideburns and lower neck. Piece of cake!

I have unusually thick, straight, dark brown hair so it really shows any and all haircutting mistakes(as opposed to curly hair). My wife is a beautician and has cut my hair for probably 20 years. I am very picky about my hair(she says). But my God,I would never have the nerve to attempt to cut my own hair unless I had absolutely no other choice ! So kudos to you guys who have the guts to try it. I guess it will always grow out if you screw it up !

I've cut my own hair for a few years now. The first time, I had my sister do it, then my mom, then I figured that I might as well do it myself.

My girlfriend really liked my haircut from my old barber who retired to Florida, so the day I found out he moved, I went to Target and bought a set of Wahl clippers. I spent over a year cutting my hair to have a #8 on the top, and a #3 on the sides, the blended on the corners. I didn't mind this, but my girlfriend wanted my hair longer. She liked my hair just about where I was about to cut it again, so I ordered from Wahl a #10 and #12 guard. I now use the #10 as my top guard and still a #3 on the sides. It's a bit tougher to blend, but just a bit of practice and checking in the mirror and it's fine.

I highly recommend getting guards directly from Wahl if you are wanting a new one: http://www.wahlhomeproducts.com/Products/HairClippers/ClipperAccessories/1 . Even though I don't use the #12, it was only $3.50 including shipping to try out.

I tried cutting my hair two times. Once as a teenager and another when i was around 25. Both times i ended up with a buzzcut.

My wife cuts my hair now. She does a great job.

This reminds me of the old lawyer joke: The man who represents himself has a fool for a lawyer.

This is exactly what popped into my head.

I couldn't pay myself enough to cut my own hair. When I go to the barber, it costs me $18 including tip and, outside of paying someone to do my taxes, may be the best money I spend. But, more power to you guys if you can make it work!

I believe this month marks my 2 year anniversary to cutting my own hair. I normally paid $15 for the cut ($11 plus tip) and then taking into account that it was out of my way to go, so I had at least a couple bucks in gas, I have SAVED over $300 so far. And I can cut my hair whenever I want to. I haven't screwed up anything majorly yet. I only messed up once when I wasn't paying attention and I put a #5 on instead of the #8. It still looked fine, but it was just a bit shorter than I intended.

And you know what they say... If you don't really like you're haircut at first, I'm sure it'll grow on you!

I cut my own hair from the age of 15 to 32. It's not that big of a deal. I used clippers and a pair of hair scissors. In all of that time nobody ever questioned my hair, so it must have been good enough. After a while, I found a barber that I really liked and I'm happy to pay him to cut it for me. It's an enjoyable experience where I can just relax and know that it'll look good.

Hey, don't get me wrong...if you can do it, I think that's great!
Like Harry Callahan said, though--a man's got to know his limitations. And I know if I tried to cut my own hair, I'd end up getting a lot of funny looks. :scared:

Admittedly I have no style or pride in my hair, its very thick, grows very fast and curls if it gets any length at all. Usually down to a #2 all over, sometimes even #1. I have done it myself before now but my wife usually does it as its easier.

I have an Oster classic 76 that I've used to cut my hair since 2004. The only times I have grown my hair out for professional cut is when I suspected I'd be looking for a job soon and want to look my best for an interview. I am growing it out now - haven't gotten it cut yet though.

I also used it to cut my three son's hair until they turned teenagers and got picky.

Would you consider posting a 'how to' on this thread? I try this cut myself using a Wahl and guide combs so would be interested in seeing what others do to achieve this style self cut :)

I started clipping my own hair about 10 years ago, when it was pretty obvious to everyone that I was balding. I used to have my wife do it, because I didn't want to miss spots, but now I just clip it myself with a wahl at the lowest setting every Sunday. Takes me about 5 minutes.
