Cracked Simpsons

I bought a Duke 3 from the BST and much to my chagrin, when it arrived it had a crack in the handle (see pic below). The seller claimed the crack was not there and had only been used 3 times, but has since avoided my attempts at contact. I have unfortunately not used this brush as I don't want the crack to spread.

Will Vulfix replace the cracked handle since I do not have any receipts or proof of purchase? I'm not even sure who to contact about replacing it.

Even though you are not the owner, I would try Vulfix.

A crack of this nature seems to be a defect in the handle, as opposed to due to abuse.

Vulfix is likely to work with you. They have great customer service.
Report the seller to the mods if you have not already done so .

Do you guys know of any contact info for Vulfix I should use? On their site it said that I would need a proof of purchase, but I should probably try and send them an email with some pics just in case.

You likely will not need proof of purchase. Vulfix has a high level of customer service. I'd report the seller to the mods too. Its highly unlikely that crack developed during shipping.

Definitely report the seller to the mods, especially if he is now avoiding you. I agree that the likelihood of the cracks developing in shipping is quite low. Part of me would like to see you out him here, but that's probably bad form. Contacting Vulfix is a good move; if it were me, I would be totally straight up about what happened. The worst they can say is "no," and they might actually be helpful. If all else fails, and you are stuck with the brush, try sealing the crack with some Gorilla Glue. I did that with my pre-Vulfix CH2, after my cats decided to play soccer with it and it developed a couple hairline cracks (narrower than yours) in the handle. The Gorilla Glue sealed off the cracks, and they have not spread. It's now been almost three years since that happened, and the brush is still performing like a champ.

I don't think that's the right idea, B&B is a gentleman's board and that just doesn't seem right.

That's good to hear, I'm hoping it won't have to come to that, but if it does I hope that will work.

It appears that this has happened with other brushes as well.

Yeah I saw those, I'll still contact Vulfix and see if they can help me out and if they can't replace it if they can at least guide me in the right direction on what to do to seal the crack.

Thanks for all of the help fellas!

It's always a balancing act - trying to behave gentlemanly, versus letting others know whom to avoid in the BST forum. But I do respect that you are holding yourself to a higher standard than this seller evidently held himself to when selling you that brush.

I understand the thought on gentlemanly conduct, but shielding a fraud and high binder so that they can continue to ply their vile trade? I am not sure that is a standard of gentlemanly conduct to which anyone should subscribe.

It doesn't foam like gorilla glue and grabs like all heck. Its finishes a bit more nicely than foaming polyurethane based adhesives and I think you can get different colors.

That's a good idea. I had forgotten that the Gorilla Glue expands, and I had to watch it pretty closely. The second time I used it, it actually expanded out of the crack and dried on the handle before I could get to it. I ended up taking a little dental pick designed to remove tartar, and scraped away the excess glue. It actually worked out just fine, but it's better to prevent it in the first place. And the color choices sound like a nice option.

I just don't want to rush to any conclusions, there may be some extenuating circumstances in which the seller has more important things to worry about than a shaving brush. Although it has been the better part of a month...

I have been in contact with a moderator and if he feels that the seller should be disclosed than that's what we'll do.

I too was was concerned about the possibility of jumping to conclusions, but if it's been a month, I'd say the odds are very good he's avoiding you. Combine that with the slim odds of the brush actually cracking in transit, and I'd say you've got a pretty good case to make for him being a bad seller.

Fair enough. Even if you don't disclose the name, please keep us informed as to what happens in this matter.

UPDATE

Recieved an email from Vulfix

Hello Aaron,

Thank you for your enquiry, I am sorry to hear about the problems you are having with your Duke 3 brush, unfortunately this is one of the pitfalls of purchasing used brushes from other forum members, from your picture it looks as though the brush has been immersed in very hot water causing the epoxy resin holding in the knot to expand and crack the handle. If you would like to send your brush to me at the address below we will have a look at it for you and see if anything can be done.

Kind Regards,

Brett.

I sent the brush to them today and hope this works out for the best

Aaron, thanks for the update. Good of Vulfix to help out. I'm a little dubious as to the explanation; I've soaked all of my pre-Vulfix Simpsons, as well my Plissons, in some pretty hot water and have never had any cracking problems (except my CH2, for reasons I've already explained). I didn't start hearing reports of cracking Simpsons until Vulfix took over, which makes me wonder if it's a manufacturing issue that doesn't reveal itself until the brush is exposed to hot temps. Anyway, it sounds as if Vulfix will make good, which is the best you can ask for under the circumstances.

I don't suppose you ever heard back from the seller, hmm? Any word back from the mods?
