Coticule not giving shaving edge

Hi Gents,

Like it says above I am unable to get a shaving edge of a my coticule. I have a KROPP razor that only needed a touch up because Larry from Whipped dog put a great edge on it. I made sure i lapped my stone with my 325/1200 duo sharp stone. I finished with the 1200 side. Created a light slurry super light, and nice light X-strokes about 15-20 laps. After with just water with refreshing the water a lot, 15 strokes. Before it would catch and pop hair but not nothing not HHT at all. Before it would be a HHT1-2.

Do your coticules polish your bevel and spine. Mine does not, I can see the scratches it makes.

Any ideas because I have been able to use my straight for month because I cannot get the stone to work for me and really leaning towards selling it and going synthetic.

Using water only only hone on the coticule with the razor only resting on the top. No pressure from your hands at all.Rinse top of stone good every 10-20 strokes. Do this for 100 perfect strokes and tell me what happens.

Don't give up just yet.. It takes a couple tries, including failures and successes to know a particular coticule.. Heed the words of your Sig and show her a good time.

I will try the 100 laps, but I just do not understand how it would become duller and not sharper. I am using ultra light pressure. Just enough to keep the blade on the coti and nothing more.

interested to hear your results as i have a coticule on the way and have never used any natural stone yet ... have you tried to shave with it at all or just the HHT ? none of my razors pass a HHT for me but they all shave like a dream :)

When using slurry to hone on your coticule the slurry should be no thicker than milk as well.I found a pic of your stone and I have an idea that is a very slow one. I would not give up on naturals but maybe try a different coticule if you don't find success with that one.

I once did a shave test and was really terrible. Hurt like hell. I do have a thick beard and sort of sensitive skin. If it does not pass HHT then I know it is not going near my face.

the main idea is let the weight of the razor "glide" on the surface..I use oil which helps with the "gliding" of the razor..mineral oil also works fine...

life2short1971,

As much I would love to buy another coticule, money is a little on the low side. That is why i mentioned before I would need to sell this coti to get something different.

It might help to check the edge with magnification after each set, just to get an idea what seems to be working on the stone. Granted that a visual will not show the keenness, but it can give you an indicator of progress. I honed my first razor, on a new La Grise, on Sunday and I couldn't even tell you if it was fast or slow. Took me 60 minutes of very close and careful work. Now that I have a general idea of what did seem to work, I can take note of the exact process that may be needed during future honing.

If you have to go in blind; go in carefully.

Was the razor honed on tape originally?

Boom goes the dynamite.

HHT and cotis don't always have much to do with each other. I never even bother. Does your razor undercut the slurry and does the slurry run up the full length of the blade when you hone? If not, do more strokes. I refresh with 15 half strokes on water, then another 30-45 at least of full passes.

Make sure you hit the linen for 60 strokes after the coti. Then strop.

Okay this morning I did what life2short... told me to do. 100 x strokes with only water. I some leg hair popping mid way, did 30 Xs with oil, 60 linen 60 leather and seemed to improve the popping. Going to try tomorrow morning and see what happens.

it realy does take a little patients and time . I wouldn't give up . you may have same problems with other hones. many of us including my self used pasted strop while grasping the coticule . Just to get the keenness right up there.. I found ti rasoir pate on cloth hanging strop worked atreat.. i'm with you on the hht it has to be good to get a good shave of coticule . any thing below a 3 is no good for me any thing above is good a solid four is simply spot on . just keep at it and before you no it you will discover the coticule feel on your face .regards gary

Another suggestion is to send the stone with someone with experience using coticules and see if they can get a shave worthy edge.
