Corn cob differences

Anyone ever notice a difference in the flavor of tobacco in a traditionally finished "Legend" cob compared to the natural "Missouri Pride" pipe?

I always seem to get better smokes out of the Missouri Pride, maybe even a little bit cooler smokes too. Could be all in my head, but I wonder if anyone else noticed anything like that.

I casually wonder if the natural ones cool better using the kernel pocket walls as sort of a heat sink....I prefer the hand feel of the finished ones though, and they seem a bit more rugged.

they are much more rugged. i constantly knock chips off the natural ones banging the pipe against a post to get the last bit of tobacco out.

That would be my thought- more surface area equals more heat exchange

This is the premise behind rusticated pipes, IIRC

I basically thought the rustication was more about hiding imperfections in the briar since you'd actually be thinning out the walls of the pipe more, and the manufacturer didn't have to sell it as a "second" but rather a different finish.

This. Although there are carvers who have techniques that makes their blasted pipes more desirable than a smooth pipe because of the uniqueness of the blast with the grain patterns on the pipe.

There are many other variable that go into the characteristics of how a pipe smokes, but the blast or rustication on a pipe increases the surface area such a slight amount any cooling would be negligible. I can see the untreated cob could smoke cooler because the density of the material changes when the plaster is applied to the finished pipe.
