Cologne/EDT similar to bay rum?

Hello gentlemen. I was sent a small sample of Ogallala Bay Rum Cologne from John Crissman a little while ago and love the scent. I was wondering if anyone could suggest a cologne or EDT that smells similar to a nice bay rum. Going into a department store/ chemist in Australia and asking for something similar to bay rum gets you a blank stare…

I'd have to say that the CO Bigelow Bay Rum is not a good representation of a "traditional" Bay Rum; it's like Nid Hog pointed out, it's heavy on the citrus and a bit on the synthetic side. But, it smells great and lasts all day, and I'm pretty sure that if you like the Ogallala you'll find no fault with it.

Thanks I'm only hoping shipping to Oz won't be a problem due to the alcohol content.

I would suggest that if you do order the C.O. Bay rum, that you consider ordering the gift set for only $6.50 USD more.

You get the same size EDT, the ASB (retails for $19.50 IIRC), and a shower gel.

By the way, they're great products. I have them in my weekly rotation, and I bought 5 of the ASBs on the rumor that it has been discontinued.
The scent is great, though almost a little tobacco/cigar-smokey compared to other bay rums.

That's not the same style bottle of the cologne that I see in the stores. The bottle I have is covered in an outer mesh-style net, has a spray nozzle, and it 6 or 7 ounces. It alone runs 40.00.

The boxed set shows the same kind of bottles that I bought of cologne and ASB. Dark brown ribbed glass with a label that looks like parchment. I bought mine at the Bigelow store in Philly in January, but I saw the same kind of bottles at the Bath & Body Works at the Crabtree Mall in Raleigh the other day.

Here's a shot of the bottle that I have. The image is from Amazon, but it's the same--the after shave is very similar.

What is Bay Rum supposed to smell like? I've never used a Bay Rum product before, and I don't drink.

I got a sample of Trumper's so-called Bay Rum and all I could smell was cloves. Is that what it's supposed to smell like? Do all "Bay Rum" scents pretty much smell like cloves?

I don't have a camera handy, nor do I have the bottle I purchased, and a google search turned up nothing; but my bottle has the same ribs on it, the same box and label, but is at least twice the size of that one and has an old style fishnet type webbing over it. The ASB I didn't purchase, but it was in a plastic tube similar to the other aftershave balms. The cologne was 39.99 and the balm was 19.99.

Does anyone else have a sprayer on their cologne, or is it a palm-pour design?

From Wikipedia:

It is a distillate that was originally made from rum and the leaves and/or berries of the West Indian Bay tree, Pimenta racemosa. Other ingredients may be citrus and spice oils, the most common being limes, clove and cinnamon.

You might want to get yourself a bottle of Dominica Bay Rum (or their Bay Rum w/Lime) AS. It's basically bay EO, alcohol (not rum, alcohol) & nothing else. Smells incredible, although it doesn't last very long.

Same price I paid.
The cologne has a sprayer on it and my balm is in a bottle identical to the cologne bottle (but no sprayer, of course).

Me too. My cologne has a sprayer, but the balm just shakes out.

In fact, the sprayer on the bottle that I got never worked right. It was loose when I opened the box, and I'd have to pump it for a while to get it out. Still, I could eventually dispense it and I used it quite a bit. About a month ago, after pumping it what seemed like a hundred times before getting a timid spritz out of my 2/3 full bottle, I wrote an email to Bigelow and told them that I was having problems with it. They sent me a new bottle and a 20% discount coupon right away. I thought that was pretty nice, as did the missus who used the coupon on some high-end shampoo and conditioner that she had her eye on.

This is all very interesting.

I bought the last of two bottles about a month ago. I called the store today and asked what size bottle of the cologne they had, and it's the 3.5 oz bottle. I asked about the ASB and it is, indeed, in a plastic tube like the rest of the line. (My cologne is 5.5 ounces, btw).

I'm guessing this was some sort of limited edition bottle I got. I too have problems with the sprayer, and it takes a good three or four pumps to get a half a spray, and then the next spray goes on the body. Each time I use it I waste half a spray on it, which is infuriating.

If I had a camera I'd post pics. In the meanwhile keep an eye out and see if you see this big bottle in any of the B&B stores the next time you're out. Two free ounces of COB BR is worth it, even if you have a bottle sitting around already.
