Cleaning Aristocrat Gold?

So I ran across an aristocrat with gold plating today. It looks to function well and as far as I can tell doesnt have much plate loss. Ive cleaned superspeeds and such but never an aristocrat. Any tips or precautions on gettin this bad boy to shine without destroying it? thanks

I own an aristocrat that I cleaned when I first purchased it. I used scrubbing bubbles and a toothbrush, it seemed to clean up pretty well. DON'T USE BAR KEEPERS FRIEND! I started out with that stuff and I noticed some small surface scratches that appeared, which isn't good.

I think the key here is to read the label of the product first and try the product in a small corner like the inside of the razor first. Don't use anything that contains abrasives... like BAR KEEPERS. If you type CLEANING in the wiki search and I think you will find a load of information there.

Hope that helps

thank you sir......I checked in the wiki and saw the stuff about scrubbing bubbles. Just wanted to make sure those cleaning instructions were the same for the gold plating.

I have had good results from Scrubbing Bubbles. On gold-plated razors, I use toothpaste as my polishing compound, followed by another soak in the bubbles.

Gold does not tarnish - but it does get dull from surface dirt and scratches. Get it as clean as you can, and never use anything more abrasive than toothpaste. The plating on razors is too thin to last through any more aggressive polishing.

On gold razors, no bleach, no boiling, no abrasives of any kind. Scrubbing Bubbles is OK for a quick cleanup but not for prolonged contact or 'soaking'.

Some Oxyclean in a bowl of really hot tap water is the way to go. You can soak the razor in this stuff and it works well to de-gunk an Aristocrat.

Dry with soft cloth.

The gold razors are limited. Can't boil them. Really should not use any abrasive unless absolutely necessary. Scrubbing bubbles and Oxyclean - that's about it. I'm not crazy about the gold finish vintage Gillettes as they do not seem to hold up as well as nickel plated razor.

The do not boil cannot be said enough. Gold plated razors have a lacquer on them that will be destroyed by boiling. This protects the gold finish so as has been said before DO NOT BOIL.
