What's new

Cheap(er) everyday watch?

For years I've worn a Timex Ironman Dual Tech. That watch has seen better days, and my family wants to buy me a new one for Father's Day. My other watch is this one. That timex is the most expensive watch I've ever owned. I'd like to replace it with something durable, classic, and versatile (appropriate with jeans or a suit), preferably under $200. I have small wrists (I'm 5-11 and 165 lbs).

aesthetically, I like these styles:

what do you guys suggest?

For every day, I'll choose G-Shock. Some of them are self-correcting, solar, and tough as a nail. If you like analog then G-Shock aviation.

From those? The Citizen chrono.

Not necessarily from these. I just found these on a quick search as examples of styles I like. I don't know what else is out there, or about different brand or model reputations for fit, finish, reliability, etc.

Yes to analog. Those Gshocks are too big and bulky. I'm looking for something with a lower profile and a slightly more "refined" look.

Stuhrling seems to have nice looking watches in my price range. Anyone familiar with that brand?

Chinese brand with a fake German name. I don't care about the China made (there are examples of good Chinese watches), but I despise the misuse of German sounding fantasy names.

Thanks everyone. The ecodrive seems like the way to go. Has anyone ever bought a watch from mwave.com?

Eco-Drives are great values. Don't forget to check out the Seiko 5 range. They're automatic (mechanical self-wound watches). Orient watches offer a lot of bang for the buck. The Orient Mako diver series of watches are great pieces and work with most outfits.
I'd also recommend Bulova Accutrons if you can find them under $200. Sapphire crystals, Swiss movements and unique styles.
G-Shocks are great as well (I have 2) but they're reserved for working out and for my super casual days when I need a watch that I'm not afraid of beating around.
If you want an amazing selection of Citizens check out DutyFreeIsland. They're prices are hard to beat and they have been a reliable source for 2 Citizens I've bought.

This is my everyday watch. I got mine about 12 years ago. It keeps great time and the sapphire crystal is great. There isn't a scratch on the face of mine and I wear it ALL the time. I too have small wrists and this one fits great.

Any of the seiko 5 military autos, tough reliable movement and classic flieger looks. For a 55-70 dollar automatic seiko you can't go wrong.

In that price range a Seiko Automatic is what I would look for, great quality and not the hugh chunky things that seem so popular these days. Or look in Pawn Shop for a second hand Omega Seamaster stainless)

Doubt any pawn shop worth their salt is going to let you have one of those cheap.

Don't discount chinese watches if you want cheap. I bought a hand winder, pretty much out of curiosity, and as a drunken goof. The thing is scarily accurate. Actually better than my SMP. Just to give it a good try out I've been wearing it every day since the weather has gotten cooler (leather bands and Australian summers are not a good combination), and it has been losing... less than one minute every three weeks. Seriously, the watch cost about $80 shipped. Now I'm not going to say each and every one of these (Parnis) watches will be like that. I am happy to admit I may have gotten lucky. But it is enough to get me to wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone wanting a budget watch.

Agree on the Seiko Automatic - the movement is usually very good and they last forever. Most models are pretty timeless, so you can still be wearing it 20 years from now.

As for a pawn shop that sells Omegas cheap? If you find one that does, look for a Speedmaster Professional and then PM me!!!!
