Celluloid Scale Reproductions ?

Hello,

Love the old celluloid bamboo scales on some of the old straight razors, the only problem is they are so fragile im afraid of tightening the pin in fear of cracking them. Has anyone heard if it is possible to replicate these by making a mold of some kind. or is there a company that makes newer versions. $bambooscales.jpg

Ask Mark Yundt aka mycarver. If someone can do this, it's him (he's just a little busy at the moment and may not be able to do it right away).

Ive thought of making a mold for some of the harder to find versions but the bamboo scales, there seems to be a lot of them out there. I think Ive got a couple like in the pic myself.

I dont think it would be terribly difficult to make a mold of this type of razor. You could stamp it into clay, let the clay dry and use that to mold the plastic. Dont know how well it will work but it should do the job. The other option is to fill the clay with wax, use that wax version to cast an Iron version which you can use to cast a lighter metal mold around.

For a one-off copy just make a mold in playdoh and pour polyester resin in it. Experiment with coloring agents. White and just a little yellow to make a nice ivory color, maybe. Wax might not work too well cause as the resin cures it heats up. Would have to try it. But playdoh works. Silicone caulking works. (spray the original scales with PAM or WD40 or something to keep the silicone peel-offable)

I would probably make a silicone mold as was mentioned. Ive cast other things using silicone molds and urethane casting resin, vacuum out the air bubbles and pressure cast.

It makes for a really clear casting if youre doing something clear or translucent
