Cella Question

The lathers I get seem great--thick, peaks, etc--but it is neither slick nor protective.

What gives?

Only thing I can think of is try a little more water. I find that a wetter lather protects my face more, compared to some of the yogurt type pics I see here. Cella is one of my favs but I do use more of a wetter shiny lather.

these sort of soft soaps need more water and hot- i let mine sit in the bowl for the length of my shower 5 min.- i am not a cella fan ( too sweet smelling) i went to RR classic and cocoa

Are you getting good shaves?

I'm currently using Cella in daily rotation with Panna Crema, and I kind of agree with you on the slickness. I think Cella is still an excellent soap. I just adjusted my stroke with the razor and I still get excellent shaves. I'm using shorter strokes with Cella. Panna Crema seems to allow longer passes; I think they add a clay additive to provide some slip.

I can't say I don't get good shaves, but it just isn't quite as good of an experience than if I use a number of other products (proraso soap, MWF, tabac, etc.) if that makes sense.

Will try more water, but I don't think dry lather is an issue...

Makes perfect sense. Sometimes soaps just don't work out. No use trying to get a product to work when so many other products are available that potentially do.

More product would be my suggestion, too. My Cella lathers are as good as MWF and very nearly the equivalent of Tabac. Keep at it before giving it up!

I was having similar issues and increasing the amount you load will help a little bit. I used it in my scuttle this morning and the heat didn't do it any favors. It had a lot of bubbles and was weak and thin and very little cushion/slickness.

I love Cella and have found that the answer to a better lather is a little more product, a little more water, and a little more face-lathering. IMO.

I don't even ring any of the water out of the brush before going to the puck and I load it slowly per Marco method. Just as dense and protective but perfectly slick. I love Cella

I too use a wetter brush for Cella (though with a couple of shakes), as well as load for 60+ seconds, face lather for at least a couple of minutes (dipping the brush tips in water as required), and get shiny, yogurty, dense, slick, protective lather. But while Cella is probably my favorite soap, I don't find it to be super-slick like RRXXX or Mike's.

I have been making my lather directly on the soap same as I would Stirling, Williams, Colgate etc. I have come to the conclusion that a scuttle is one of the biggest problems my fellow wetshavers/lather makers have. The only reason I use a scuttle is for creams and soaps that didn't come in a big enough container to make the lather in it. (ie TABAC) As I scroll through some of the posts and discussions about my fellows friends on this forum that have difficulty making lather, I see a common theme of a scuttle involved. (even the recent Williams thread)

I don't intend to sound demeaning or condescending but I would like to try to encourage my gentleman friends on this forum to skip the scuttle and just make the lather on the puck. When the lather is perfect, stop whipping and start shaving.

For those that claim too much product is used in this method, please note that I also squish the unused lather back onto the puck to be re-invigorated again the next time I shave.

Thanks everyone! Will try again with even more product and water and will post the results.

Just add more water and swirl it longer, and shall deliver. It's a magnificent soap, don't give it up just yet. Maybe moving it to a bigger container would do the trick.

Another factor can be the age of the croap. I've found that the fresher the soap the less slick the lather...I just bought 4-tubs from Joe at IB and left the lids off for 5 days and now the lather is much better...odd but true. Things get better with age.

For me, I get the best results from Cella when I use more product.

I agree with this. I have a kilo brick that I am working on, so I am not afraid to load my brush for a long time. I typically load for a full minute even though I could get away with loading less. It's not a very expensive soap at all, so have at it!
