Caswell-Massey products

I know their shaving soap is not rated well here, but I got a Sandalwood trial/travel pack to try out their other products. It looks like they're supposed to be the American version of the three T's. I was very disappointed. The scent is nice, soft, powdery. Definitely not my favorite sandalwood. The hand lotion is mineral oil based, and not very effective. The soap, bath gel, and conditioner were ok, but not noteworthy. The only things I really liked were the Honey-Almond shea butter lip balm and the sandalwood talc, which is a nice size for travel.

There is a drug store here in Salem that has all of the caswell-massey products on clearance sale for 50% off. I think it is still bit expensive. I bought 1 wooden bowl of Shaving Soap and 4 tubes of the Sandalwood Shave Cream. I took the shaving soap out of the bowl and put it back in the cardboard box for future use. I them melted 2 pucks of the VDH Glycerin soap to put in the bowl. Nice container.
I use the Sandalwood shave cream. i like the smell but can't get a good lather out of it yet. Still, I do manage to get a great shave while using it and that is enough for me. I just think you can find better value for your money out there.
I will buy more of thier products when the sale price goes down to 75% off. I may buy their preshave oil for $6 later this week.

For the fourth oldest company in America I can not understand how they continue to miss the performance boat with their products. If it wasn't for unscented Kiss My Face the soaps and creams made by Caswell-Massey wouldn't produce any lather at all. Thank goodness for super lather.

I just bought 28 bars of their sandalwood and almond soaps on sale today for a buck a bar. I still smell the Sandalwood on me.:thumbup1:
Tomorrow i am going to scout the other stores near me to stock up on this stuff.

Holy crap:blink: Did they go down to 75%?

You know, it is a shame what has become of Caswell-Massey. I was not familiar with them till I started traditional wet shaving. I had a cake of their sandalwood shave soap that I chucked in the trash. It wouldn't even lather decently for bathing and the scent was just plastic to me. The wooden bowl is beautiful and my Blenheim Bouquet shave soap resides there now.

Enter the chaps who used old school C-M products from the early eighties back. I have seen it posited their shave creams were made in England(likely Creighton's) and their bath soaps enjoyed a fabulous reputation. Their American made shave soaps were supposed to be top shelf as well. I have a bottle of their Persian Leather a/s splash. It is nice but VERY strong, somewhat synthetic, and does not scream top shelf. I have smelled the Jockey Club a/s and it is very good but no local supply. They have discontinued a number of items as well. Including the Persian Leather. I don't know about their bath soaps now but I would be quite hesitant to pay full price unless I was sure of the performance. Another item they bollocksed up was Green Briar. I managed a sniff of the old stuff somewhere and then they went and changed it! The old stuff was what Polo wished it could be. Very nice stuff. I just wish C-M would have smelled the coffee with the whole renaissance in mens grooming. If my 40 year old American made English Leather shave soap can perform like AOS's when there was no emphasis on better mens grooming then a company that was supposedly into that market should have done better. Just saying.

Sing it, brother. It would be great to see them compete with the English brands. Although I'll tell you that the talc I just dusted my nuts with works just fine. :biggrin1:

Vlad. I will take your word as to the performance. No play by play necessary.:001_rolle

I just went over to their site and it is a shell of its former self in my opinion. Indeed, Persian Leather is gone. I was also having trouble finding Jockey Club a/s splash. It was not listed on the fragrance link except in the cologne section. It was not until I clicked on the "shaving products" page that I found it under aftershaves and balms.

And I agree with you. There is no reason other than not caring to NOT be able to compete with the English, German, and Italian products. After all, I suspect they were well inspired by the tradition of the old English houses though they actually pre date most of them. BTW, for those who like it the No. Six aftershave is on sale for fourteen dollars.

$1 a bar? For that price, the soap is great!!! I do like their #6 soap and always wanted to try the patchouli and the sandalwood. Any phone number for that place so I can get them to ship me some? PM me if so

just shot Sierra Mist Natural out my nose - thanks for the laugh!:lol::lol:

I've used CW since the late 70's and have seen many ups and downs in their product line. Now I only use their cologne/aftershaves and powders. It seems that some scents come and go from the catalogue. I used Newport for years until it took an unexplained long hiatus and I switched to Tricorn which remains my primary daily scent. Newport is back now. I've tried most of the others, they still sell a nice sampler for that. The aftershaves have glycerin and are not too drying. The other products seem overpriced and underperforming to me. It a shame. Their retail stores were really cool, but most have closed. The catalogue/online runs frequent specials. Worth a try then.

Thier Sandalwood soap is marvelous. It has a beautiful scent which lasts nicely after a shower. I have somewhere aroud over 30 bars of it now. I wish I would have bought more. I tried to use the Almond soap as a shaving soap, but it didn't work out to well. It did smell really nice though.

As a long time wet shaver, I remember C-M as having very good products although I have not used them for a number of years years. I do have a C-M badger/boar blend brush that I use from time to time that is a descent performer. My folks used their products for many years. With all the negative talk here I have generally stayed away from their shaving products. I know that there is a vendor here who regularly has C-M products on sale.

Enjoy your shaves,

Doug

I've always been pleased with their bath soaps, predominantly due to their scent, but performance is good as well. The price is a little high, so I buy when it goes on sale. Shaving soaps are another thing, but for body soap I have a pretty simple check list.

Make dirt go away- check
Make stink go away- check
Must not dry or irritate skin- check
Must last for reasonable amount of time- check
quality scent I look forward to- check
