Can't work every time....

Auction Sniper, my favorite "last several seconds" bidding software site has let me down .

I'd spotted a nice looking Sheraton case. It contained a mediocre looking gold Tech. Set the snipe (so I wouldn't forget) at a high enough limit that it probably would have won (set around $16 if I recall, with the beginning bid at $3.99 I think). It sold for $4.24 .

So instead of watching the auction, I was here, surfing the B&B. Went back to check, and my bid wasn't placed!! Seems Auction Sniper is down at the moment (so check your snipes if you've got anything going!). Maybe a DNS attack, maybe software update, who knows. Maybe a "revenge of the sniper haters". I know there are some who simply hate that- Anyway, can't win them all. But this is the second Sheraton case I've missed recently, and they simply don't come along every day! :mad2:

Easy solution. Place a bid for $1000 on any item you think you might want. You are almost assured of winning it then, and you aren't subject to the vicissitudes of the snipe company.

Very true! And even at my $16+ bid, it was a near certain lock. Only problem? When you bid early, you simply drive up the price, on top of making your top bid a target. So I nearly never bid before the final seconds of an auction. And I've relied on this service many times recently, and they've helped me score a lot of great items at reasonable (not bargain basement) prices.

Now then, if it's anyone's intentions to try to turn this thread into yet another "sniping vs. anti sniping" thread, I'll ask that we stay relevant to the topic. I've no intention of beating that dead horse. AFAIC, it's a waste of bandwidth..

For clarity's sake, yeah, I was whining a bit- but more over was letting others here who may use this service that it's down (so they will need to verify if their bids are being placed for them).

BTW, I've bought items on eBay where $1000 wouldn't even make the opening bid. And I'm just a lowly out of work Carpenter....

Next time I place an item on ebay, I cordially invite you and one other person of your choosing to engage in this strategy in bidding for my item.

Yup. That's why I can't believe someone was...yea I'll say it...STUPID enough to place a freakin 20 dollar bid on the double ring that is on the bay right now. Why in the name of all that is good would you place a 20 dollar bid? Whoever bid that is the type of bidder who constantly drives prices up by placing consecutively higher bids instead of just placing their highest bid

When I snipe, I prefer to do it the old fashioned way - manually.

Perhaps that was their highest bid. I can honestly say I would love a $20 double ring, but probably wouldn't spend what they are going for. Stranger things have happened and maybe the sniper software wouldn't work and the person would win it for the $20.

Thanks for the heads up T Rick. It seems to be working again, at least it was between 2:00 PM and 3:00 Pacific time.

Sniping (for me) seems to discourage the "Nibblers" plus I can forget about the auction and go about my business.

I may not be relying on the software that day .

Agreed. And it seems to be doing fine now. They may have been having server difficulties, I Mod at a site that went through a horrible bout of that, we were up and down a dozen times or more. It happens, even to the "big guys".

And I agree on the "nibblers" too. The down time also cost me a really nice Milord case (and another Tech ). As a test this evening, I grabbed a Red Tip case (with a Red Tip "Super Speed", which was.... a Tech). Good to have, as I just got my first Red Tip (needed a case) a couple of days ago.

Was going after a sweet (mint) '46 Milord too, but it went above my max bid (it was worth it IMHO, just not to me with all the cash I've been bleeding!- I'll feel better when a few more of my pieces are delivered in the next few days :w00t:).

I'm a massive fan of this software too but have also had some strange outcomes with it losing items for less money than my bid etc. I just have to say oh well what's meant to by your's won't pass you by. :001_smile

Douchey behavior. And the buyer is not a newb. I've said it many times, and I will always say it. Snipe, snipe, snipe. Even when you put in your highest bid and leave it, curiosity will get the better of many folks and they WILL run your bid up.

I don't know if this case is nice enough for you, but I spotted it a few days ago and decided not to purchase. Curiously, it also has a gold tech in it.

Thanks! I did see it, but forgot about it while concentrating on the other that was in better shape. Bird in the hand and all, I guess I should pick it up!

Interesting comments on the old bid bag game. The only problem I see with following the suggestion of just throwing a cool $1000 on something you really want is what if someone else out there figures, what the heck, I'll just throw $900 on it that ought to do it? You might be in for an unpleasant surprise. Don't bet more than you can afford to lose, good luck bc
