Can you add scent to your shave soaps?

I was wondering if you could add some of your favorite AS to a melted puck of VDH and get a nice scent that you like while shaving. Does the scent stay on you or wash off with the soap? If you add lets say Aqua Velva to VDH, are you then stuck as far as wearing an AS now because the scents will clash? How much AS would you add? I am curious as I have never done this.

I added essential oils to VDH glycerine before. It usually takes a couple of tries to find the amount you prefer, but it is a nice way to upgrade an unscented soap.

I have re-scented VDH with Old Spice Aftershave. I don't think the scent stayed on my face after washing off. The soap remained re-scented for about three weeks to a month.

In the melted state, I just shake in a generous amount. It doesn't have to be exact, but too much could effect the soap's ability to lather, and re-solidify.

Another question, if you have an AS that can make your face red or cause irritation when applied after a shave, would it be the same way if you used that AS in the melted soap and shaved with it? I like Pinaud Clubman and Pinaud Bayrum, but it can irritate my face where as Aqua Velva Classic does not.

It's not quite the same as what you're talking about, but I've put a couple drops of lavender essential oil right on top of a puck of unscented AOS, and lathered up. In terms of performance, everything was the same, but the scent was great, much better than AOS lavender soap.

I'm wondering if maybe you could add some essential oils to a generic glycerin soap that is melted down. Would it lather well? I've haven't dabbled much into the homemade stuff yet. But at worst you'd have a nice smelling soap. Making your own soaps is kinda girly though ha, just sayin.

Yep.
VDH is a meltable soap so it is fairly easy.

You don't have to use VDH and compete with its mild scent either, you can go from scratch...

Haha yeah, I realize that alot of these products are made by men. It's just the image of soaps with oils being handmade by guy that looks like Bob Vila is funny to me. :biggrin1:

I experimented with adding essential oils to unscented cream, but gave it up. Too much skin irritation. In general, I think this is best left to professionals, but there is probably no great harm in trying.

You could, but be aware that some esssentials can be a real skin irritant to some people. It is a YMMV. Though essentials do smell great.
Some oils have a lower flash point. generally in a small 1 puck type of batch let the melted soap cool a bit before adding the oil. if the oil is addeed at temp higher than the flash point you coule lose some or a lot of the scent.
