Can I lather in the bowl?

I recently purchased a bowl of Proraso along with a men-u shaving brush and was wondering if it was ok to stick the brush directly in the shaving cream bowl? Reason being my bathroom is running out of space and buying another bowl for the sake of using it as lather is costly and time consuming.

I read a comment stating that you shouldnt lather in the bowl but have a separate one, but the instructions on the box dont indicate this. Is it ok if I just use my shaving brush and stick it in the bowl with the cream present?

You can certainly stick your brush directly in the bowl. But my suggestion would be to get enough product on your brush and lather directly on your face. No bowl necessary.

You *can* build your lather in the tub, but you will use up product very quickly.

I would suggest, as the poster above, that you load your brush, then build the lather on your face. You can also make the lather in your free hand.

I lathered in the bowl at the beginning, but loading the brush and lathering in another bowl is better. I really like the hand-thrown lather bowls that West Coast Shaving sells.
Or do as The Dean suggests and forget about the bowl and lather on your face.

I also just bought a tub of proraso (white) recently. And just like The Dean said, i loaded up the brush with product and face lathered. I am 100% converted to face lathering, it just feels so much better.

Or go to target and get a cereal bowl for $4

If space is the problem, that probably isn't going to be his answer--but a good suggestion nonetheless. I bought a soup mug from Dollar Tree for $1 when I started shaving. Still have it, but now I use it as a soup mug.

THanks for the very quick replies! Im sort of paranoid about damaging my face if I lather on it, I will try it on my hand.

I recently also ordered a men-u shaving cream.

Anyone have experience with the prosaro shaving foam? Was almost willing to buy that as I sort of wanted to avoid the shaving brush but I apply it to my chest and its fine.

We have a saying around here: YMMV (your mileage may vary) meaning what works for some might not work for others. But in general, a brush should only help your face, not harm it. But give your hand a go, you may like it. (Come to think of it, a girl said that to me once.)

I disagree, if the soap is triple milled like mwf, it will still last you months, even by lathering right on the soap.
and if you want to try brushless, try the razorock brushless gels. An even cheaper alternative to that is barbasol foam. If, of course, prorasos menthol assault wasnt for you

three-tu-tu, three-tu-tu
There are a few here who find using their face as a bowl is too irritating - but only a few. Lots of people face lather and if you have a brush that has the appropriate amount of skritch for your face you should be fine.

You can lather on the soap - but you might find that you end up with too much product on your brush (in which case you're back to face lathering).

You can get a small bowl and store your soap tub in the bowl between shaves, thus saving space.

You can do whatever makes you happy. Try a few things and find out what that might be.

+1, and it works where ever you are. When you travel you don't need to carry extra gear or change your technique.

I nest them when I'm not shaving. I don't bowl lather any more but it was never time consuming for me. Building is lather is going to take time either way.

Try it before ruling it out (applies to anything).

It may still last months but it will be used faster. I don't build lather on the soap but it's up to each to determine what works best for the individual.

+1 to the face lathering recommendation.

I have a tiny bathroom and we have one of these from Target:

It has two wire shelves (dunno why there's only one in the picture) and assembles so that it sits above the toilet. I think they're fairly cheap. We have some little fabric bins/baskets in it with all of our stuff in it. Then I keep my shaving mug to the side with my razor, brush, and cream in it. Credit to my fiancee for coming up with it, but it's fantastic.
