Can anyone Identify this?

Hi Guys,

I recently acquired my grandfathers old razor. It is a Gillette, stamped "made in England" on the bottom. Can anyone tell me how old they think it might be? I used it the other day and got an OK shave. It was a bit sticky and didn't glide overly well, but I reckon that is because of the oxidisation??? Its also an awful lot lighter than my Merkur 38c, so will definitely need to stay alert when switching between the two!

I would also like to give it a clean up, but not sure what to use. We have a product called Silvo in Aus... would that be any good?

Thanks for the comments!

Nick.

Looks like a post war Tech head, but I am not sure about the handle.

Thanks Shutterbug, just googled Gillette Tech and the heads do indeed look pretty similar. Maybe the handle was a replacement jobbie??

So what do you reckon late 40's early 50's??

PS... Does anyone think its worth using or should I continue with my 38c and keep this for sentimental reasons??

I agree the head looks like a Tech. There are no date codes on them, and they were produced from 1938-1979. Yes it is worth using, it was the most popular DE razor for good reason. Enjoy!

Clean it up and use it. It should give great shaves.

ETA use scrubbing bubbles and a soft toothbrush to clean it.

Sorry for my ignorance.. but what do you mean by scrubbing bubbles??? I'll definitely give it a clean before I use it again, the top was a wee bit dirty and didn't glide as well as i would have liked... Will see how we go after a clean!

Sorry, just noticed you are in OZ. Scrubbing bubbles are a brand of bath and shower cleaner in the USA. Maybe some of the blokes from OZ can chime in on the Aussie equivalent.

In Oz, I think Easy-Off Bam® Active Foam Soap Scum & Shower would be similar to Scrubbing bubbles. Just make sure it does not contain bleach.

i dont know if you can get peek polish local in oz, but oz ebay does it for about $10 per 100g, its very good stuff, also instead of scrubbing bubbles a good foam bathroom soap scum remover will do the job, cif, dettol and even supermarkets own brand, just make sure none contain bleach, these are some of the things i use in the uk, i would think oz and nz would have a lot of brit products/brands.
the razor is a tech, around ww11, i am sure i have seen ones like that, but the handle had a black coating, might be army issue.
