Buying a Rooney XL?

This not a thread to extol the virtues of the XL line, there are countless threads doing that, but rather to highlight the differences between the 1, 2 & 3. Anyone can read the specs over at Jim's place, so this is just a few observations from someone who has the good fortune to own all three. First the published specifications:

Knot Loft Handle

1XL 25 46 40

2XL 28 47 45

3XL 30 53 50

My measurements are a bit different and I suspect there'd be subtle variances with most brushes:

Knot Loft Handle

1XL 27 46 40

2XL 27.5 47 44.6

3XL 31 53.4 49

Obviously the most significant difference is in the knot in the 1XL. I can't say that all 1XLs would be sized like mine but will say that in use the 1 & 2 feel almost identical on the face. I tried a shave last night using both and they were indistinguishable. So if you're thinking of an XL and the 5mm shorter handle is not an issue, you'd do well to check out the 1XL. BTW, as a point of reference, the 2XL's handle is very similar in size to the Duke 3.

Your 1XL is definitely an odd one. I'm fortunate to have all three as well. I'll have to measure them when I get home.

Great timing! I was just about to post a new thread today asking advice on just this very topic. This info is very helpful, and thanks for the great comparison photos.

I love this kind of post, nice work!

Does the 3XL feel any more lofty than the other two? Or does the size of the bulb compensate for the extra loft?

1XL: K: 24.5, L: 45, H: 39
2XL: K: 28, L: 49, H: 43
3XL: K: 29, L: 51, H: 48.5

Guess there are quite a bit of differences from advertised on these guys. I'm totally happy with each and every one though. The handle on the 1XL is a little too chort for me but it's still a great little brush that allows me a lot of control over the lather.

I'm narrowing in on a brush purchase (I started a thread today) and a Rooney Stubby is at the top of my list right now. The only brushes I have for comparison right now are Rooney Style 3 in sizes 1 and 2 Super. Does anyone have experience with one of these brushes that could help me compare them to the Rooney Stubby line?

I'm looking for something that has more backbone. My 3/2 is almost unused because I find it a bit too large on the face to control the lather. Given that the 3/2 is too large, should I be looking at the Rooney Stubby in Size 1, or a 1XL? How does the 2-Band in the Heritage line compare to the Rooney Super I already have?

If anyone could point me to a picture of a 3/1 and a Stubby 1 and/or 1XL, I'd greatly appreciate it. I looked all day today and I can't find one anywhere.

Some Rooney Brushes below and a shot of the 1XL next to a Stubby 1. My 3-band Stubby 1 gives up nothing in the backbone department to the 1XL as it is super packed. I think this may be somewhat unusual as my other stubby brushes (my Stubby 2 is out on loan) are not the same. IMO, all are fantastic brushes. Based on what your preferences are.I'd go with the 1XL or even the 2XL.

That Rooney Stubby 1 is definitely unique, they had old stock at classic shaving recently, it is super dense and soft, tons of backbone.

The 1XL price is about as high as I'd like to go in price if possible. Would you mind sharing your feelings on how the 1XL feels vs the Stubby 1 in terms of size on the face? According to specs, the 1XL has a 3mm larger knot and 2mm more loft than the 1XL.

My Rooney 3/2 in Super feels too big to me and is messy. The 1XL is 1mm *bigger* in knot, but 2mm *shorter* in loft. Does this mean the 1XL is also going to feel similarly messy to me, or is the shorter loft going to make for less splay on the face?

IMHO, its the handle height between the 1 and 2 that makes the 2 a more comfortable brush. The handle of the 1XL was just too short for my preference.
