Burma Shave ?

Burma Shave was a brushless cream. I don't think you whip up a big lather with it.

I remember a Burma Shave product that produced lather; I don't remember how it was packaged. It may have been a jar of cream, but I'm not sure. Whatever it was, I got it, a brush, and a mug all in a shave kit in the 1960s after I broke my Old Spice mug that I've never been able to replace (never seen another like it, although the "coffee mug" is similar).

Your shaving soap-
Is just a dream-
We only made-
A brushless cream-
Burma Shave!

Seriously, I think there was a fairly recent run of "Burma Shave" mugs, brushes and soaps in a gift set, but other than the name they don't really have anything to do with vintage Burma Shave.

The Burma Shave brand name is owned by American Razor, the Personna people, right now. Back in the 1960s, Burma Shave's products weren't very popular any longer, but were still doing business in their own name. I used both brushless and lathering shave creams from Gillette back then, and any handy cereal or dessert bowl for a lathering cream. I never bothered with a "dedicated" bowl choice back then.

I have lost my recall of most everything I did regarding shaving from 1960 to 1985 or so, and I'm relatively vague about my first six years of shaving. I could and did collect and rotate among several creams in tubes in that time frame, while only using one soap at a time, in one mug at a time. I would probably have preferred a lathering version when both were available.

The soap was introduced in 1997 by American Safety Razor as a nostalgia item, and discontinued about 2010. I don't think it was highly regarded.

In a way, the idea of a Burma Shave shaving soap is pretty ironic, since the company pitch during it's actual heyday was that brushless cream was the modern alternative to outdated soap...

"Your shaving brush / Has had its day / So why not / Shave the modern way / With / Burma-Shave

"Shaving brushes / You'll soon see 'em / On the shelf / In some / Museum / Burma-Shave"

For anybody who's not familiar, the company was famous for using clever sets of (mostly) rhyming signs that you'd pass in sequence on the side of the road. They were a part of the American road from about 1930-1963, with about 600 different rhymes.

They also did clever print ads. Here's one of my favorites...

I've used the BurmaShave Shaving Soap. I didn't find it to be anything special.

A passable shaving soap, with nothing to really justify paying more than a dollar or two for it. It's a step up from Williams (which I consider to be an utter wreck), but not nearly as good as VDH Deluxe.

I can't see any reason to go out of your way to acquire it, or pay any sort of price premium for it, since it is a discontinued product.

I also like the VDH soaps. I didnt know the history of the Burma Shave soap. I do see by the picture in the ebay auction that its made by Personna. Glad I checked here before buying some of it.
