What's new

Brush recommendation

What do you like and dislike about it? Do you face lather or use a bowl? Soap or cream? Or a variety of different things?

It is the only so I can't compare.
I face lather 90% of the time with creme. Just starting to buy shave sticks.
I was going to buy a travel/gym brush, but then I thought maybe get a better new brush and use current one for travel/gym.

You could try an inexpensive boar?

They take a little time to break in, which they reach their full potential.

Not my images.

The Semogue 1305 would be a decent all round brush. I think its the same knot as the 620 which i have, i just find the handle to be a bit fidly.

The Semogue Owners Club (SOC) i use for face and bowl lathering, no problems whatsoever. Its one of my favorite brushes.

The Omega 49 although a large knot can be used for face and bowl lathering.

These are my own experiences :)

There are alot more brushes you can choose from, but these are decent for the money :)

What you really need is a Whipped Dog Silvertip. You won't believe the difference from your gray badger. You can select the handle and knot size. A 20 mm, 22 mm, or 24 mm with a resin handle is less than $30.00 and is head and shoulders above what you have now.

Its a bit more than what you are looking to spend but the SOC in silver tip badger is my daily brush and I love it. There are a lot of choices out there as you now, Simpson makes some stuff in the 48-75 range which has a great reputation. Whipped Dog gets a lot of talk around here but I have not tried one yet. Recently I have been restoring older brushes and find it to be quite economical. Check out the brush restoration thread here it has some great inspiration on it. You can get a nice handle on the bay for less than $10, drill the old knot out, polish it up with PlastiX and get a TGN knot of your choice. All in All you can get a $100 brush for a quarter of the price.

Dave

I would definitely recommend trying a nice boar before taking the plunge on something very expensive. I bought an expensive Badger and ended up liking boars better so now it is in the B/S/T forum.

What would be a nice boar brush?

For face lathering I like the shorter loft brushes.

Silvertip is really nice and soft and I can say that Larry at Whipped Dog got my brush in my hands within two days! $30-35 can't be beat.

Two more affordable options seem to be TGN brushes (around $50) with Finest or Silvertip, and there's some Vintage Blades / Frank's Shaving Finest (around $30) that look nice as well, haven't tried them yet.

Also, some of the smaller Simpson Best brushes are around $50 and they have a great reputation.

I haven't yet met a boar that worked perfect for me, but then again I've only tried two nice ones (B&B Essential and Semogue 1470). I want to try a Semogue 620 and/or 830/1305 before I make a final judgment on them.

My boars include Semogues and Omegas. Get one of each, maybe a Semogue 620 and an Omega 49. $30 for both. Dump the creams and face lather like a real man, with a stick.

Are these inexpensive Omega brushes (<$15) really that good when you are face lathering?

For that money it wouldn't hurt if you don't like it. You can always use it as a travel brush and not care if it gets lost.

I picked up the 1470 for $14.00 shipped from Ebay and just sold my last badger.

I may be a brush idiot but can somebody explain what the difference between an Omega 49 and a Semogue 610?
One thing I know for certain is my current brush gets squashed when I face lather, bristle opened up.

You are basically looking for something with more backbone that doesn't splay when you apply it to your face. Based on recommendations I picked up the 1470 which is pretty similar to the 610 but with a different handle. I have not tried the Omega 49, but that was on my short list to buy. The 1470 is not broken in yet, so I leave the comments to someone who has more experience with them.

I am trying to wrap up my order.
Which one brush would you pick?
Semogue 620 or the Badger and Blade Omega from WCS?
What is a comparable Omega brush to the B&B Omega brush?
