What's new

Bought an Ever Ready 100 for my first restore. Any advice?

It has a few scratches and nicks, but not deformed or cracked like alot of the brushes I see around. Paid $4 for it. Anyway, what do I need to start? Oh, I found another that actually looks usable as is for $6.50, should I return for it? They were both labeled as 100, but looked to have differant bases. Was the 100 just the knot? Mine is black and yellow, the other was blue and white.

If you're going to clean up the handle itself start with some sandpaper. Autozone sells packs of multiple grits. I started with 320 all the way up to 2000. Then used some Meguiar's PlastX and a buffed it to a nice finish. To drill out the know a drill with a forstner bit would work just fine.

I did a restore of the ER 100T and posted a thread about it here. I installed an Omega boar knot from TGN in it, but before I did that I drilled out the old knot and epoxied a heavy old bolt into the hollow of the handle. Also filled most of the handle with JB-Weld (metallic epoxy). I then sanded off all the sharp corners because I just did not like the feel of them in my hand. I made the brush very smooth and also got rid of the mold marks. The added weight and smoothness of the handle now makes it feel like a solid resin handle instead of a cheap hollow plastic one it was. It's really worth the time to do this as it will really transform the final product.

Be sure to run the brush and the sandpaper in water to make the sanding more consistent and reduce gouging. Wet sanding is an excellent way to get out the imperfections.
