Your Good Friend Sweeney
Hello, all. I'm new. I've been considering getting into shaving with a straight razor, and found an old one at a flea market today for ten dollars. It's from a company I know, Boker, and the blade seems to be in pretty good condition. It's even, has no chips, and slices very cleanly through a sheet of paper.
Through some research of my own I was able to find a similar blade on eBay. http://cgi.ebay.com/American-Line-S...171?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a5ec60df3
My blade features the same engraving of a ship (apparently, the SS. St. Louis) but does not have the name beneath the ship. It also doesn't have the notch towards the end of the blade. The handle, while chipped and quite worn, does not match the handle of the one in the photo either. It's a translucent yellow-brown color and, also unlike the razor in the photo, has a small inset piece of metal I assume was meant to be engraved. It's worn, though, but I can make out what looks like a capital "P".
The "H. Boker & Co" wording at the top between the trees is identical, and is also repeated on the (neck?) of the blade, and the reverse says "Germany". There is no engraving on the reverse of the blade itself.
I'm not sure if it's the same blade as shown in the link above, and has just been ground to above the text on the picture, or if it's a slightly different version. The engraving is definitely identical, down to the lines.
My main curiosity about this razor is when it was made. Also, though I intend to have the razor brought up to shaving quality, I'm curious what it might be worth (though I know that without a picture, I can only hope for a very rough idea).
Primarily I just want to know how old it is.
Thanks!
