Blade discoloration

doctordial

my brain goes "thonk"
I've been using the carbon steel blades in my 1924 and they get a blackish kind of line where thr lid on the razor closes down on the blade. Is this something to be concerned about or not. I usualt change to another blade thinking that blackish discoloration might be some form of rust.

As long as the cutting edge of the blade is free from rust i would not be concerned, but the rule of thumb when useing carbon blades is to
make sure that they are dried after use and then all will be ok.

just my 2p worth

Definitely dry them after used don't let carbon blades sit in water they will rust. You can dab a little bit of mineral oil on them too. Some people don't like them as they feel they pull and tug. I primarily use carbon steel blades I find them to be smooth though stainless steel blades won't rust. I can get up to 7 uses out of one carbon steel blade and I store that blade in a dry non humid place.

I have also heard some people dip them in alcohol to get the water off them. I always just dabbed them on a towel and set them up to dry. Never really had a problem with rust, thankfully.

I use my original carbon steel STAR blades from 1904, exclusively. I rinse with hand soap and dab dry with a towel after every shave. This keeps them sparkling.

The black discoloration you're noticing is called devil's spit, and is a deterioration of the surface. Cleaning and drying them after use will prevent further damage. However, rigorous polishing of the blades should remove the devil's spit, though you might jeopardize the integrity of those old blades. Best to leave them alone, as it won't hinder your shave.

My STAR blades have devil's spit on the spines (from previous owner). Not a big deal at all.
