Blade contour questions.

So I was looking at the contour of different razors after the blade was secured in the razor and I found that the cheap DE TTOs have a slight concave curve to them when looking at the blade from end to end (sighting down the length of the blade bar). This includes the Feather Popular, Misaki, and Weishi 2008-T razors. Curiously, none of my Gillettes seem to have this concave contour to them. Their blades are flush and straight in line with the bar. Could this be the reason I have been nicking myself and not getting a very smooth shaves out of the cheapies? Anyone with knowledge on this please chime in. Thanks for any advice on this.

Not sure what you mean. Are you saying the safety bars are not straight in some razors whereas you find the Gillette safety bars are straight? I notice they are all TTO razors you refer to.
The caps and base plate need to be straight to get the blade edge in a straight line. The cheaper razors will not be subject to stringent quality control.

I think I know what you mean. You are looking down the sharp (long) edge of the razor blade as it sits in an inexpensive razor. You see that the sharp edge is NOT a straight line.
I agree that would nick you. Since blade exposure would vary throughout, there is no way you could hold it at one angle that is right. Some part of it is going to be hanging out there, scraping and nicking.

I am not sure a little curvature would be a problem. Look at the slant bar. That blade continously changes contour along its length. I have no problem shaving with it. In fact it is my favourite razor.
I am inclined to think the answer to a poor shave maybe getting the right blade angle.
Dmalsbury, what sort of trial have you made with these razors? I found the following thread on the Weishi;

Thanks for your response. No the bars are straight. It's the blade as it sits in position. It looks like it has a rise in the middle (a bow in it) as you site down the shaving edge of the blade. I don't find that in my Gillettes. Everything seems fine on them and I get terrific shaves from them. (I haven't nicked myself in years). I don't even know why I am testing these inferior razors in the first place. I guess I'm just experimenting in search of "that perfect combination" of hardware! Which I may have already found and don't realize it.

Thanks for the thread link. I had read that and that's one reason I bought the Weishi. That and the 2 dollar price tag! It just seems odd that these three razors have a little rainbow type curve in them as you site down the cutting edge and the Gillettes do not. They are perfectly straight in relation to the safety bar. The only thing I've changed in my routine is the razors themselves. Everything else has remained the same. These trials have been only for self education purposes just to see if the cheaper razors compared with the old gillettes. I get great shaves from the Gillettes and have not nicked myself with them in years.

Thank you. That's what I thought also. It seems that these cheaper razors cause that little rainbow curve because the gillettes are dead straight along the safety bar and the shaving edge of the blade is as well. I have not nicked myself with them in years.
