What's new

I have no idea why anybody likes Voskhod blades!

One member has suggested the Treet King as a replacement for Voskhod blades several times. Certainly the King is easier/cheaper to buy in the USA.
Confirmed, both very good blades and the Treet King can be a substitute for Voskhod blades.
Of course, both of these blades are among my absolute favorites after the GSBs.

Let me produce the Voskhod rant to end all disputes on this matter. Another member said that Voskhods "shine" when used in an aggressive razor.

No. They will shine when the entire world stockpile is loaded into a ballistic missile and launched into the core of the sun.

If I had to choose between shaving with a Voskhod OR having my face waxed and that ripped off by some war criminal...I'd have to think it over.

Let me put it this way. I was born and raised in Ohio. And I have a degree from The Ohio State University. If any member who has a Michigan address so chooses, I will mail them at my expense a Fatip Piccolo and some Voskhod blades. With the proviso that you USE that combination and post the results. If you don't, I will publicly declare you a scoundrel. Which is to say, a regular resident of Michigan.
I’ll take you up on that, being a Michigan resident, a scoundrel, a fan of Voskhods and a fan of the Old Type who has never tried a Fatip. I’m in a bearded phase at the moment, though, so it may be awhile before I can settle this debate.

Okay, send me a private message with your address. I've been looking for creative ways to pare down my razor stockpile and the Piccolo was on the short list. I was starting to think we didn't have any Michigan members!

That's quite a surprise.
The Treet Black Beauty has to be the bluntest blade that has ever touched my face. This blade is even duller than a Voskhod blade.
I don't think it's a surprise!
Lots of people here love the Black Beauties. I bought 100 of them out of curiosity and it was based on positive opinions that I read. And it was so cheap that it was a very inexpensive experiment.
The Voskhod on the other hand has more negative comments currently (I believe) than the Black Beauties.
They're not my top blades and aren't what I use daily, but if I'm in the mood, I'll use one.
I'm wondering if you got a dud?
I've found that they're pretty inconsistent in that regard so that may be a possibility.
When you get a good one it's great and when you get a dud, it's pretty bad!

Perhaps that's the reason. I had a single tuck in a sample pack, I tried two blades with the same subpar experience. So I binned the rest.
Why bother if PermaSharp, Nacet and the like are still available 😉

I recall when they removed "Teflon Coated" from the box, there was many posts on B&B concerning the blade might be changed. There were a lot of Voskhod lovers then. I'm not sure where they all are now.

True. But somehow it has the minimum sharpness required for one shave. (For me)

But the best part of the black beauty is the after shave.

It literally feels like a blade never touched my skin. Simply amazing.

Reminds me of a straight razor. Cutting hair without exfoliating the skin. Feels like magic.

All you gentleman that like the Black Beauty might consider giving the Treet King or Treet TJax a try. They are mild like the Black Beauty and so very smooth. Being stainless steel, they might last you a few more shaves.

I tried the King this morning. It would be perfect if Treet had just ground the apex to a sharper point.

This morning, for the first time, I used a Merkur 37C that I recently received from a gentleman on this forum. This was the first time I'd ever used a slant. I loaded it with a Voskhod blade, precisely because Voskhod doesn't do all that great in my Merkur 34C and so I thought it would make for a good comparison. It was one of the best shaves I've ever had! That Merkur 37C with Voskhod gave me as good a result as my Merkur 34C with Gillette Perma-Sharp. I hadn't shaved since Sunday morning, and I hardly needed any touch-up at all after my usual one pass (below the beard line).

Them are called black beauties but the paradox is that they are not so beautiful to look at, I don't like them but there are those who appreciate them and find them beautiful even for the black color of the blade.
I just bought some packages of black beauties and will pick them up again later, I do not understand what they have in common with the Russian Voskhod blades.

I enjoy both black beauties and voskhod blades. Mostly use them in fairly aggressive razors.

As is usually the truth, YMMV, especially with blades.

I haven't used a Black Beauty in years, but I remember their being not much like Voskhod at all. My memory of them is that they were 'sharp but dangerous'.
Black Beautie blades very sharp and dangerous?

It is strange,I often read the opposite and that is that they are on average not very sharp and already after the second shave show a noticeable decay in performance.

I need to try them as soon as possible to verify the feeling on me.
