Best Wood Handled Brushes

So SWMBO an I are coming up on five years of marital bliss. Tradition dictates that the anniversary gift be wood and since she is very much into following tradition, I figure this is a great opportunity for me to den build. In addition to a nice soap presented in a wooden bowl, I plan on subtly hinting that a brush is in order to celebrate the occasion. Here are my criteria:

Badger Hair
No Painted Handle (I have the IB LE Semogue)
Suited for bowl lathering

So what would you ask for if you were me? Semogue Owners Club? Muhle?

I have two really NICE custom burl brushes. Go for it big and get a nice custom burl brush

If you can stand a bit of scritch the SOC 2-band is a great all around brush. Otherwise I would probably agree that a custom wood brush would be in order, I would go with a Shavemac knot if you can swing it.

Let me throw out a cheat (since I hate real wood brushes):001_smile, there are some really nice faux wood handles (Morris and Forndran, others). Wood + Water = BAD!

I totally forgot about this! I suppose I better start peppering mr Sabini with emails now if I want to make it happen :) great idea!

I'll go along with the wood and water being bad for sure. Check with the vendors here on B&B, and I'm sure you'll find some great looking brushes that will compliment your soap bowl.

I don't know what price range you are looking for, but I have the Omega 10005 boar and its a nice wooden handle brush. I don't treat it any differently than a non-wooden handle brush and its a good "bang for you buck" brush. I guess if the wood goes bad or splinters or rots or something, its cheap enough to replace. The loft is long enough to be a bowl-lathering brush, but I mainly face-lather with it.

Sounds like a great brush! I am more partial to Badgers than Boars - just a preference thing.

I forgot to put this in my initial post, but this is a great wedding anniversary gift! shavemac also makes some wood-handled brushes, and you could get them engraved as well (maybe wedding date on it?).

If you can see your way to a boar that is nicer than my expensive forays into the 2 band badger world, my Omega 11126 has withstood the trials of regular duty for some time now. Still looks great. I'm thinking the Ovankol wood used in the handle is more durable than Beech, Ash, or some of the other popular woods used in brush manufacture.

Great suggestions all around. I cannot speak for others but the Rudy Vey custom I referred to has a resin stabilized wood handle. It has been put in a vacuum chamber with resin pulled into the wood as air is drawn out. It is then heat cured followed by multiple varnish coats. I had the same concerns about wood but Rudy assured me that with a process like this water is a non issue. Just something to consider.

Agree I own one of his as well. I can't see there ever being issues with it due to the way it was processed. Also, I own the SOC type wood handles. They are also processed in a way that makes them VERY water resistant. They look as good as the day I bought them and I don't anticipate any problems with them down the road. The new wood handles, particularly the new SOC type is much more durable than the old style wood handles.

Rudy might also have some faux wood material and his turn around time and communications are better - fast and consistently reliable.

On second though have your wife get ahold of shavejoe to make you one of those fancy brushes he just posted in the restoration section!
