Best shave of my life today

I had the most awesome shave I have ever had today. I have a neighbor who DE shaves too and we were talking and he said after I hot towel, hot lather etc, actually shave with cold water. So I did. Closest shave I think I have ever had. This may be old news to most of you but wow does it make a HUGE difference, at least with me it did. He is an engineer and was talking to me about the tempered steel blades and heat. I had been rinsing the razor with hot water in between passes but cold from now on.

Iv'e seen this before on the forum. I tried it and got the worst shave I've ever had. For some reason cold and lukewarm water does not work. I'm happy it works for you

I have tried both hot and cold water methods and i vastly prefer tepid/lukewarm over them. Both hot and cold water make my shave uncomfortable in their own ways, and it may be psychological but i think i get a better shave with lukewarm water. :thumbup1:

One thing I miss now that I shave in the shower is not getting the water as piping hot as I can in the sink. I can't imagine enjoying rinsing the razor in cold water but you've definitely piqued my curiousity.

I still hot towel and hot brush/lather but the cold razor was really a nice surprise and really made my face BBS.

Tried with cold water (again) yesterday:

What I liked: closeness, maybe just a bit of a closer shave than usual.
What I disliked: The tugging and pulling, even with a sharp blade. One or two cuts that bled more than usual.

The verdict, at least for me is that it works. But I do much prefer the comfort and predictability of warm/lukewarm water when preparing for the shave. By the way, I always rinse the razor with cold water.

Gives me shivers thinking of a few G.I. shaves I had out in the field, cold water in one's helmet and plain soap with a Gillette Good News disposable. Ouch!

So everything usually with hot water is done with cold water instead? I use hot water for a quick rinse, but the rest of the shave gets lukewarm water. Right before I apply my ASB I use a lot of cold water though,

No. the way I did it was:
1]Hot towl
2]Hot brush/lather
3]cold water while shaving and rinsing the brush in between passes.

Now that I shave at the sink with a DE, I like warm/hot water, but when I used to shower-shave using cartridges I'd first fill a big mug with cold water and use that for rinsing the razor. I really liked the cool cartridge while everything around me was all hot water and steam.

I still haven't tried cool water with a DE, though. I just love the way those big, heavy, warm DE heads feel too much to switch.

ive never tried the cold water shave.....may do it just for kicks. But for those warm water shavers....nothing beats a sink full of hot water.....let your razor w/blade set in the hot water for a few minutes....then got to work...like a hot knife through butta

I tried it for the firs time about a month ago and loved it. I used cold water from start to finish. It feels great on a hot day, especially if you use menthol (Proraso) products. I have also used ice cubes to rinse between passes and it felt great. For me shaving with cold water greatly reduces razor burn and irritation.
I haven't tried the hot/cold thing but will give it a try in the future.

I was kind of excited to try this cold water stuff since it worked for some many others.
Just tried it. Not for me. I'll just stick with the hot water. Boring hot water. Comforting hot water....soothing hot showers......relaxing hot tubs.......... just terrible.
Well, all the best to you cold water boys.

+1, except the ice cubes - sounds interesting, but I can't be bothered.

Whenever I use lukewarm/hot to change things up, I tend to get more irritation and weepers than when I use cold.
