Best BBQ in KC

Hey all I am leaving right now on a spure of the moment week end to Kansas City. Whats a really good BBQ down there? Going to be with my 14 yr old daughter so I would like to stay away from a bad part of town. Maybe something close to the Plaza.
Thanks

My vote is for Gates. I think they have two locations. One, where we go, is in a seedier part of town, but I've never felt threatened. Of course, I'm a barbarian, so no one messes with me.. but anyway, I do think they have a place downtown. Google it I guess. Gates sauce is the only BBQ sauce allowed in my home.

The "others" are Arthur Bryants, Jack Stack, and Zarda (it's not on the big lists but I give it props because my cousin, God rest his soul, formerly worked there.) There's more, but the big rivalry is between Bryants and Gates.

Ok, it seems Gates has more than two locations. You won't be disappointed wherever you go, though. We go to the one on Brooklyn

I used to go frequently to KCMO on business and there is a lot of good barbecue to be had. Jack Stack was good, but it wasn't for me as it seemed a bit too much like a themed and branded chain restaurant.

I like LC's Bar-B-Q, a down 'n' dirty joint at 5800 Blue Pkwy down around Raytown (SE).

I don't pick these places because it is so YMMV with the various smoke/sauce combos. One thing I found out fast is that Arthur Bryant's sauce is HEAVY with vinegar and it gives it a hard bite on the tongue. Too much for me.

As always the best place you ever had bbq in KC was some little dive you cannot remember the name of on a street you wouldn't feel comfortable walking down at night. And by now the place has a different name. Just my experience.

Oklahoma Joe's: 47th and Mission Rd. - In a gas station

Regardless of where you go, always try to get burnt ends.

Closest half-decent barbecue from The Plaza is Gates on Emmanuel Cleaver Blvd. It's east of the Plaza on the other side of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.

Oklahoma Joe's. It's in a gas station. Really. But the cue is so good that the vast majority of the building is dedicated to the BBQ and the gas station part is just a corner of it.

Oklahoma Joe's, then Arthur Bryant's.

Friend who lived there wouldn't take me to Gates he disliked it so much. I also read it wasn't very good so I didn't care. Seems to be a love it or hate it type of place.

LC's has great burnt ends.
