What's new

best bay rum cream/soap

I have to tell you, I bought a ton of Ogalalla soaps. They smell great but the lather is kinda sketch. I'm gonna be superlathering it, unfortunately. Should make for some great scents, tho. esp with the TOBS 'Shaving Shop' that I bought.

I have had Col. Conk Bay Rum soap in my rotation for years. It produces a great lather for three to four passes and has a nice strong Bay Rum scent. It is inexpensive and readily available. If you don't like it there is always the BST. Ogallala is another good choice.

Enjoy your shaves,

Doug

Burts Bees makes a good bay rum soap, or at least they used to. The last time I bought it, I bought a number of pucks, which I'm still using, so I haven't tried to purchase any for a while. I also like their bay rum AS balm and cologne.

I LOVE Ogallala...never had a problem with the lather!
Yeah, I don't know what my problem is. I've tried about every water ratio I can think of, including virtually no water and just face lathering and dipping my brush in a bit of water as I go. That was about the best success that I've had but even then it was just ok. I'm wondering if it's my brush (Duke 1) because I never had a problem lathering glycerin soaps with my Conk/Vulfix pure badger that is far less dense than my Duke.

How do you lather the Ogalalla?

Needless to say, there was lather o'plenty this morning when mixed with the TOBS. Now, if my Becker scuttle would just get here....

I face lather...soak the brush in hot water while in the shower....ring the brush out....load the brush up good with Ogallala...start face lathering...dip brush tips in water....go back to face lathering...repeat process a couple times until lather is to my liking. I have noticed that it takes a bit more water than some other soaps.

I shaved with Ogalalla Bay Rum (+ sage & cedar) this morning, for the first time. From a sample slice. I bowl lather. I had to go back to the puck three times. I essentially built lather three times from scratch. With well soaked boar brush. Tried everything I could think of for water content, but never found the sweet spot. And it dried like a demon on my face.

It might just be me, my technique or expectations. On the plus side, the aroma is great - much stronger than Col. Conk, and more complex and interesting. Could be too much of a good thing for some but I liked it. Plenty of glide, not much cushion because I couldn't get the lather I wanted, but no matter. The after-shave face feel was wonderful. In a class with MWF.

Rather a mixed thing, and I suspect it might be best for the face-latherers who don't mind continually working with it.

I actually melted a puck of Col. Conk with two samples of Ogallala Bay Rum together and this stuff is awesome! Great scent of Ogallala bay rum and the performance of Col. Conk.

I'm curious to hear about Saint Charles' Bay Rum if anyone has any information on it.

I like it a lot. It's the current bay rum in my rotation. Performs well, great scent—pairs well with Pinaud. Bay Rum with Orange from TGQ is right up there too.

been loving that ogallala soap sample john sent to me. autumn is rum time for me. goes well with cider i guess. the soaps all lather just fine for me. lately it's been the sage and cedar that works well alongwith a follow-up of the same after shave. good shave to ya
