Barrister & Mann - Nocturne

Didn't find any comments regarding this particular soap, so wanted to add in on this one. Got this one and a Cheshire a few weeks back from the last discount he had. At first the scent was a bit confusing, honestly I had to say it was a bit off putting when you smelled it out of the tin. As most of you know this is a soft soap as trying to get the soap out of the tin, even turning it upside down you can leave your finger impressions on it, which is sorta interesting as most of the soaps I've had are already packaged in tubs/containers.

Given that there were several positive write ups here and around the net on the brand citing quality I gave it a go, first time I wasn't too crazy over it as I couldn't get it to lather up and the smell was too strong in the wrong areas I wasn't crazy about, but I kept going at it for another 2 weeks, on and off, and I have to say, it really does match up nicely with the fall weather here in the east coast. I couldn't quite place it but the strong initial smell actually fades away and the profile changes to a more balanced smell of how is describe as "apples, newly fallen leaves, woodsmoke, and the faintest touch of cinnamon" It has a fresh fall foliage smell or of cider making at a farmers market or apple picking just that mix of pleasant smells that illicit that reminder when you go outside after the shave. It also leaves my skin nicely moisturized post shave that I can still put on the aftershave and it doesn't feel as dried out as other combinations I've used. Functionally it provides a nice cushion and easy glide to the shaving process, its as thick as the other products I have in my new arsenal so I'm happy to use it during this season!

Worth a high consideration for a tallow soap, it had its initial hiccups but once used the smell mellows out to become more balanced to be my first season appropriate soap.
Can't wait to break into the Cheshire as the bergamot/lavender combination truly smells of earl grey in solid soap form!

I'm happy to hear this. I grabbed a puck a little while back, but haven't used it yet as I'm trying to get through my samples. The initial apple/cinnamon scent is great, but what's leftover in the 'woodsmoke/leaf' arena has been quite off-putting. Hopefully I'll find the same thing as you in that the latter turns into something more pleasant when I actually start to use the puck.

Nocturne took a while to grow on me as well, but now that it has, it's my go to soap. The only issue I'm having with it is trying to find a good aftershave pairing. As for the Cheshire, that's another great choice and I think you'll enjoy it immensely.

I get more of the apple cider smell which I like. Perrformance is on par with all the other B&M soaps I have in my rotation which is top notch. I think you'll really like the Cheshire as well.

Smelling the samples doesn't work on this one, all of my samples smelled the same initially out of the box. You have to lather them up to see what they really smell like. To me, the Bay rum smells like sweet apples and the Nocturne like cider. Both are really nice for the fall weather. The other scents don't work for me personally but some people absolutely love them. The performance of this soap however is on par with the best soaps I've tried. It lathers right up, has excellent protection and leaves your face feeling great. A truly excellent performing soap.

I got a tin off B/S/T. The scent is...different. Not sure its my favorite compared to most of Mike's offerings but performance wise it is top shelf. I would actually give it a slight jump over Mike's, YMMV.

I really liked the Nocturne as far as the scent goes, unfortunately it made my shaving area red and caused a burning sensation so I sold them (Ronnie Aloha got one of them). All of there scents sound good, but once smelling most of them I don't care for most of them. I do really like the cheshire and the lime, lavender, and cedarwood. Performance is outstanding and can't really tell a difference between them or Mike's. I will have at least a puck from each in my rotation as long as they continue you to make soaps.

The scent sounds wonderful based on your fair and thorough evaluation. The soap is top quality! I might have to pick up a puck of this. Thanks for sticking with the soap. I think that helped with your review. Some people try a soap once and then write it off completely if it isn't too their liking.

I've used two of the Barrister/Mann shave soaps...bought em both in tins. I used the Seville 3 or 4 X's and found it a bit strong for me so I PIF'd it. Haven't heard any reports from the recipient so I can't offer any more on that one. I kept the vetiver/heather/clary sage and rather like this combination. performance as others have said, its top notch, for me anyways...I leave warm to hot water on the top of the soap for a bit before loading my brush

I use a Duke 3 in best and a Proraso Pro (AKA Omega #48) and both brushes when loaded make gobs of slick cushiony lather. I face lather and shave with a straight so I keep the lather thickness on the thin side. I can build this one up into a big pile of poof if I want to but this type of lather really doesn't interest me...I wanna see where the blade touches down. Maybe if I had a safety bar in front of the blade I'd go for thick poof to shave with :a30:

Anyways, I'm thinking about trying another one of his shave soaps. Given my current preference in flavours (vet/heather/clary sage)...what would other B/M aficionados recommend I try next?

Best,

I would recommend either the Cheshire or the Lime,Lavender & Cedarwood. But I think perhaps the Cheshire might be a safer bet unless you have an aversion to Earl Grey tea. Take a whiff of a Bigelow or Twinings Earl Grey tea bag, pretty much spot on for the scent you'll be getting.

~~~thanks for this! actually, I want to buy two soaps from B/M and one of them is for an English friend of mine. I'm not familiar enough with his habits to know if he likes to drink tea, but then that's a requirement growing up in England, isn't it? :lol:
which reminds me....eons ago (late 70's) I was renting an apartment in Detroit and the older lady across the hall from us left London during the bombing when she was a young girl. Long story short, she got me interested in drinking tea. Her method, and a commoner's I'm sure, she boiled water in an open sauce pan, turned the flame off, dropped the requisite amount of loose tea leaves (Lipton, and I used to take her grocery shopping to buy them, and Poppov vodka, but that's another story :wink1:) into the water and let them steep...strained them while pouring the tea into cups. Again, I doubt the Queen's Mother ever made tea that way (maybe she did?) :001_huh: Tasted great to me :yesnod:
So I'll have to give the Chesire serious consideration...
Best,
Alright, I'm just gonna throw this out there, feel free to throw it right back at me: am I the only one that thinks Nocturne smells like a State Park campground bathroom?
Of all the B&M samples, I wound up ordering Nocturne and bay rum in full pucks.
I love the spiced cider and "leaves in the fall" smell.
All of those scents sound wonderful from the descriptions. Probably too strong for me to tolerate, but the Cheshire especially sounds beautiful.
I am currently 7 shaves into the 3017 process of a new puck of Nocturne. I will give a full review when the soap is done and gone (which may be awhile), but I will at least give a short summary of my experience so far.
As a preface, I shower shave and face lather with various brushes...
This is my first B&M soap and overall, I would rate it significantly above average near the top of my list. The only abnormal quality is the large amount of water that the soap can take/incorporate. Once you dial in the proper dosage, you will be rewarded with a voluminous amount of slick, protective, stable lather.
As for the scent, the initial smell is one of apple cider with a lean toward tartness (not sweet) and an underlying smoky note. As I face-lathered, the smoky note becomes more prevalent. However, a hint of cinnamon and nutmeg break through to work with the cider to balance out the smoke. Needless to say, I am enjoying the overall scent package and I find it perfect for the fall/holiday season.
