Barber hone lapping out chip damage

Hi Gurus - a quick question:

Is there a faster way to lap some serious material off a barber's hone? I know these are freakishly hard, but I recently got one with a small edge/top chip on the surface. The options are 1) lap it until my arms fall off:cursing: 2) just try to avoid the chip by slightly modifying the 'X' 3) use the back.

Are these all valid options? Is there a better option?

Thanks!

depends on where the chip is and the size I guess. basicly, it wouldn't be worth worrying about if it has no raised edge to catch the razor

if it's large enough to cause chips in the razor no matter what you do, I'd guess that lapping the stone might work, but yeah, it'd take time...

Sorry, but I'd say just avoid that section of the hone would be a better idea then trying to remove large quantities of stone surface in order to make it look 'pretty'

do you have pics

Not a good one

If the chip was smaller, I'd chamfew the edges over it, but it's pretty big. Maybe just sand it down a little bit so there's nothing jagged and lap over it.

I recently did it to a Swaty 3 lines... it was in really, really bad shape but got it for 10$. I took it to 80-grit sandpaper, then 120-grit and then to a DMT C... took about 2-3 hours. :bored: Now it's my go-to finisher.

Cool, thanks! I actually just looked at it today, and the back (unmarked side) is pristine, so I may just use that.

Actually, the side with the mark is the "back" in the sense that the side with the longer usable surface would normally be the one to use.
