What's new

Bad hair day? No... bad shave day. :-(

Yesterday I realised that Geofatboy from shave nations motto is very true. "Have a great shave, have a great day"

Sunday morning I had a 2 day growth and had to shave for a 10 hour shift at work. I had a fresh blade and the shave was wonderful, great lather, no irritation, BBS shave.

Monday morning, I had a 12 hour shift at work and a shadow on my face that needed taking off. Result was a terrible shave, bad lather and lots of irritation. Possibly the worse shave I have had with my DE razor. Probably a result of bad lather, over confidence, trying to go fast and not spending as much time in the shower before the shave. Either way a bad shave really gets you off to a terrible start. My neck was sensitive all day yesterday, quite painful.

Oh well, day off today so my face can heal, then tomorrow I will chuck out that blade, pick up my favorite shaving cream then start a fresh.

I'm beginning to think it's a bit like golf.

Start out terrible, keep hacking, then one day the stars align and for some mysterious reason you hit the fairways and greens like you are the next Open champ.

Got it you think.

Then you go out the next day and whack, you find you are the same hacker you were before.

Divots all over the place and very little desirable result.

But having tasted sweet success once or twice you can't stop now.

You either have to make a clean break at the outset or reconcile yourself to the never ending search for the Holy Grail - the repeatedly attainable DFS/BBS or par round.

I guess non-golfers won't understand.

Funny that you make this thread... I just finished a pretty terrible shave. I've been shaving with my shavette for a little over a month now. It's been a slow learning process but my last two shaves with Shark blades and Proraso cream were absolutely amazing... the best shaves that I've ever had in my life.

This morning I decided to finally try a Feather blade. From the beginning, my lather was too watery and I didn't feel like throwing it out and starting over so I just kept going with it. Then came the shave. It honestly wasn't that bad but the weepers decided to return. It's been several shaves since I've had any weepers, but I got about four of them on my chin and one on my cheek next to my ear. I have no idea how that one got there, I've never had a weeper or a cut that far up.

Then there was blood. I have no idea where it came from, but there was a decent amount of it. By the end of the shave my blade was skipping and dragging and I just wanted it to be over with. Oh well, at least I didn't actually cut myself.

So here I am dealing with the worst shaving experience that I've had in a few weeks, but at the same time I also got a BBS shave. I'm alone and confused and just really need some time to sort it out in my mind. I like the close shave that the Feather gave me but I honestly have no idea where the weepers came from. They showed up on the second pass when I was going across the grain. I've never felt so lost and confused in my life. I need someone to hold me.

The other day used a GEM Micromatic, about 6 weepers on my neck after an ATG pass. Last night used a 39C slant, 1 weeper on Adams apple, great shave!

That was my Sunday shave. Burned all day long. Up till then I had been pretty happy with how I had been doing. Today was pretty rockstar tho!

All my bad shaves are on one day stubble, it just is the hardest to get a good shave off imo, as there's too little to really get hold of, and the bristle is concrete like and the blade just can bounce of without really taking all that much off.

Also, it is so small that the warm water and brush won't be as effective prep wise. A four day gap is like a differenty ball game, DFS after two passes, blade feels like it could destroy anything. Walk out of the bathroom roaring like a Lion!

I get the same experiences. I think I am not going to attempt BBS two days in a row again. Either the first or second day I will settle for an acceptable shave.

My face has healed up nicely, neck does not feel sore today, looking forward to shaving in the morning. Considering a bit of experimenting, possibly try face lathering with cream? lol

I think face lathering with cream is a common thing. Maybe a really hot towel over the face for a few minutes on the one day stubble?

Not great for time constraint though.

With regards to the OP, I'm totally in agreement...great shave, great day. The problem with a bad shave day is that the next shave day can be tricky, too.

For those of you with concrete like stubble leading to rough shaves, I'm in this camp as well. That being said, I do shave every day. Two things I do to make this easier...1) limit ATG passes...I'm to the point technique-wise where two WTG passes on my cheeks actually feels BBS in all directions (the neck isn't quite there yet). 2) I face-lather everything, and one thing I've started doing is leaving my lather on for a couple of minutes before commencing the shave. I've found that it helps to really saturate and soak the hair.

That being said, the worst vice is advice, so take the above for what it is. :biggrin1:

Well, just had my second Feather shave and it was a dramatic improvement over the first one I mentioned in this thread. I managed to get BBS without any weepers or irritation whatsoever, save for a small patch above my Adam's apple. Well, no irritation there, just not quite smooth. I realized that I still have some bad habits from my cartridge days. When I first got my shavette, I found myself scraping at my skin until it was smooth. I quickly learned that this doesn't end well and that I need to limit my passes no matter how much I want to scrape it smooth. This didn't really work for me at first because I was absolutely terrible at using my shavette. I decided to once again try an approach with truly limiting my passes.

I did three passes. WTG, XTG, and ATG. It turned out surprisingly well except for the fact that I completely forgot that the hair above my Adam's apple requires a downward pass to get it against the grain. This stubbly patch is going to bother me, but at least it will help me remember next time

A few splashes of witch hazel after rinsing my face and I'm feeling amazing. Great shave with a shavette and a Feather blade, a combination that many folks on here would claim is dangerous for a noob. Can't say I'm too fond of the witch hazel smell, though.
