Art of Shaving Bowls

Ok - jumped on the half-price sale last weekend from Foreman, and ordered some AoS soap in a bowl. It's my first AoS purchase, and it seems to be a high quality tallow-first soap in a very nice bowl.

So my question is, how does this nice looking bowl stand up to daily use?

I used my Kent Soap this morning that I picked up on the bay from kentbrushes - great shave, but was reminded how, ahem, 'broken in' a wooden bowl can look.

Any AoS users out there care to fill me in?

Thanks.

most of my AoS bowls had been re used for years. I have 3 which I continue to refill with Lavender,Sandalwod and lemon. I don't even remember how much I paid for them.

I've been using the same AOS bowl for 6 or 8 years (can't remember exactly when I got it). It still looks good. I once used it for daily shaving for a whole puck of AOS Lavendar. That was 9 months of daily use. This is a good quality product.

Mine are 108 years old but look brand new.

Seriously, they hold up really well. Congratulations on a fine score!

Glad to hear the quality is there.

So there's a reason it's a $20 bowl....

Thanks!

Yup...thought about getting a second numerous times...the only thing keeping me is the wife and wanting to keep the variety in the shave den going.

AoS Lemon is either my #1 or #2 Tallow based...it varies every day!

The C&E Bowl would be too large for the AOS puck...I tried it, and the soap will just spin around the bowl, and I couldn't even glue it with a bit of water

I hear AoS puck dimensions are 3"3/8" across the top. My C&E bowl is that exact measurement. It moves around?

You can mill the soap to fit any container- there is a tutorial about it in the soap stickie.

Milling has made my soaps unattractive.

Well my cade puck went from being nice and round to lumpy in my OS mug cause it wouldn't fit and I had to mill it. Personally, I just like the puck to fit. When you mill there is a slight loss of soap, it takes more space milled, and when you need refills, you must re-mill instead of just drop the puck in. But I guess that's what you pay for $20. I'm going to try putting a little cream at the bottom of my C&E bowl then place the puck on top. I have some AoS sandalwood cream and soap on the way. I'll post back.

It might sound silly, but I also dislike the look of soaps milled into other containers. I really don't know why, but there is something about the proper fitting bowl that makes it look so much nicer. Maybe one day I will get over it.

:001_unsur Atleast there's two of us.

I agree that it doesn't look as "pretty" when it's milled, but I find after maybe 20 uses milled soaps look the same as normal pucks. The money I save by milling the refill pucks instead of buying them with bowles gives me more money to buy MORE soaps!!:thumbup:

I just got my AoS cream and soap. I took a generous finger of the cream and coated the bottom of my C&E bowl with it and then stuck the puck in. Swirled my brush around minutes later and it works PERFECT. I LOVE this stuff.

xezmer, if the cream decides to break loose at some point and give you a spinning puck, I am pretty sure you can pull your soap out, wipe your dish clean and dry, and then melt and pour in a small amount of a melted (microwave) glycerin soap puck and squeeze your AOS puck down on top of that. When it sets up, it shouldn't show and should act as a great adhesive to hold your puck steady.
