AOS - barbershop shave

I found that AOS has outlets that have an "old" style barbershop in the shop itself (on the side usually) where you can get a master barber to shave you (for a price of course).

Has anyone tried getting a shave there? My wife and I stumbled on of of these AOS outlets near us and I started chatting with the sales person who later introduced me to the master barber there. Nice, young chap.

The prices were (if memory serves):
Royal shave: ~$50 (prep, shave, post treat)
Regular shave: ~$36 (prep and shave)

I figured I am saving myself $50 every AM...imagine that. ~$1,500 per month ($18,000 per year) savings.

Nonetheless, I was curious to see what it would feel like to get someone else to shave me

. I have not done it, but wondering if anyone has tried?

Maybe some of the barbers here can also chime in and let me (us) know what they think about this service and prices.

Thanks guys,

I have never had a barber shop shave, but there are far more negative experiences (bad razor burn, lots of nicks, and weepers, irritation) than positive ones reported to the board.

Add in the fact that the razor being used is a Shavette (a disposable blade straight) rather than an actual full fledged straight razor, and one can quickly determine that there are far better ways of spending that $50.

I had a shave there a few times...the vegas store in mandalay bay. It was ok. I think its better doing it yourself. I went with the shave that included the after shave mask which was good. I would try it once if you get a chance just for the experience. I kind of felt the blades they were using werent the sharpest but there was no blood loss and thats always good :)

oh yeah, i am not one that likes a guy rubbing my face so when he started he kept telling me to relax and I couldnt. But i did go back a time or two after

That's good to know...thanks John :001_smile. Somehow, I didn't think that it would be the same as the way old time barbers used to do it. I had thought that I had seen a video of Mantic (on his blog site) getting a shave like that in a Vegas barbershop (don't recall which shop or which hotel though)...that seemed to be with a real str8.

Hey, you forgot to tip yourself. It's way over 20K.

What was I thinking ?...it's amazing how much we tend to short change ourselves, heh?

Hi Frank,
Do you recall if this was with the real str8 or a Shavette? Maybe this was the video I was talking about with Mantic

Thanks guys, :thumbup1:

This is mantics vid. Looks like a shavette.

Looks like a Dovo Shavette with the red holder to me (a Shavette using a 1/2 DE blade).

One should also note, that the lather is lather from a machine, and is not applied with a shaving brush.

The use of the disposable blade straight, and machine generated lather makes the experience much different from the barber shop shaves of old.

It's not impossible to find a barber shop doing a shave with a real straight razor, it's just increasingly rare.

Depending on state, and local laws, in many areas it is flat out illegal to shave a customer with an actual straight; they have some misguided ideas about it not being possible to keep a straight razor sanitary, and thus think a disposable blade straight is safer (although the Shavette has many more small nocks, and crannies where germs can hide).
