Anyone try "Susan Darnell Vitos shaving soap"?

hey everybody
Susan Darnell Vito shaving soap is another one of those italian shaving soaps that sell in gigantic 1kg blocks. I have come upon a vendor who sells this along with cella and P.160 (yes it is in stock). I just have the urge to try these great italian products and would not want to miss out on one. Wondering if this is similar to cella and p.160. I've read that the scent is between P.160 and cella

Can anyone chime in?

The same question was asked a few months ago with no replies.

I'm a fan of Cella, Valobra, P.160 and would LOVE to know how it compares to other Italian shave soaps. I've found one vendor who sells this stuff. I just wish I coud buy a small sample.

Anyone know if it tallow or veg. base soap?

Whers Marco when you need him! :thumbup1:

I know, if anybody knows anything about it, it will be Marco.

My friends, I'm totally amazed on how well you, abroad, know some Italian soaps that are almost unknown even here in Italy, for most Italian shavers.
That said here is your answer. Susan Darnell Vitos is an excellent tallow based soft soap produced in Genova, the same city of Valobra. It is very difficult to find on the market, since introduced almost exclusively for professional barbershop use. It comes in a large 1 Kg block, just like Cella and P.160. Its scent is very strong and it is a classic Almond fragrance. In terms of quality and performance Susan Darnell Vitos is comparable to the best Italian soft soaps. If you can find it (and this is something hard) you pay about € 8/10 per kilo block. Here is the ingredients list: stearic acid, hydrogenated tallow, water, potassium hydroxide, glycerin, sodium hydroxide, sodium hexametaphosphate, talc, benzaldehide.

Thank you very much friend :D
Turns out the vendor I had found was sold out and his website wasn't updated :(

And here's Marco! :001_smile

Amazing how many Italian soaps of great quality are out there.

The is an ebay vendor of Susan Darnell Vitos from Europe. The price to have it shipped to North America is costly.

I figure it would be close to $80 US for 1 kg of this soap shipped. For the same price you could grab some Cella and multiple sticks of Valobra.

I'd love to try Susan Darnell Vitos, but not in this lifetime at that price.

Hello Marco and others,

As Italian soaps are my "hobby" too, I would like to add (as far as that's neccessary with Marco's extenisve knowledge) that Susan Darnell Vitos is indeed much used by barbers. It's in the 1 kg blocks in green and red (Sapone Barba Extra Super). But there's more to this brand as they also carry the pre and post cream like Proraso does in 500 ml. cans. The smell is more mentholated than Proraso. And then there's a new product, called Vitos Instantanea, which is kind of a fluid cream, that's meant to be used as a shaving cream, but wouldn't neccessarily need a brush. So it's between the foam and a cream or soap. It comes in large 500 ml. bottles.

Bye,

Eric

This Italian eBay vendor is offering 1 kg bricks for €5.00 + €8.50 shipping (€13.50 total, or about $18), and they claim to ship to the US. I can't seem to get Google Translate to translate the shipping details tab, so I can't tell how much the shipping surcharge to the US is.

The shipping cost to the U.S. is €35 (approx. US$48), plus approx US$7.00 for purchase of the 1 Kg brick. (The pricing is courtesy of eBay, Google, and Babelfish, and I got the exchange rate from xe.com)

So, including some additional postage for forwarding from the purchaser to the other participants, you're looking at, say, $10 - $15 (depending on how many pieces the block is subdivided into. I used the range of 4 - 7 pieces (7 @ 5 oz each, 4 @ 9 oz each) to develop my estimate.

Any volunteers ?

To avoid disappointments or worse, bear in mind that an Italian kilo Vitos will most likely be around 950 grams when you get it. (And that's including packaging (which doesn't weigh much))

Wow! What size cup would you have to use for a 2.8 pound (approx. 44.8 ounce) block of shaving soap? I bet that soap would last for many years used by the average shaver (of course barbers would soak it many times a day and use it 12-15 times or so in that day, so a barber could use it up in a few months). To compare, a full-size VDH puck is 2.5 ounces and my Williams puck is 1.75 ounces. My understanding is even the fancy brand pucks are usually less than 10 ounces.

shipping to Europe is 35 euro's, US would be more....

Increasing the number of soaps actually decreases the shipping cost. So, two 1 kg blocks is only 42 Euro, 3 is 49 Euro and 9 is 91 Euro....plus the soap for 5 Euros each.

I got a sample while ordering P160 and Cella from Eric(perfect service, BTW...) but still have not tried it although at a glance it seemed runnier than other italian soft soaps?
Will give it a go in a few days...

I've found this stuff to be pretty amazing. The scent is milder than Cella but similar. The lather and shave are simply excellent. Easy to lather, thick, creamy and moisturizing. Easily one of the best shaving soaps I've used. definitely worth the cost considering how long a brick will last.
