Try a Merkur HD with a Feather blade and some TOBS Avocado.
I am new to this so my experimentation is limited but I do have a thick, dark and curly beard. My razor is a merkur futur and I have an EJ 89l on the way. With the future I have found that the merkur blade it came with sucked and the red personnas I ordered with it are good for one, maybe two shaves. I am now using feather blades and I just got my 4th shave out of it and it was still a dfs but I will put a fresh one in tomorrow. The feathers are very effective at giving me a dfs/ bbs shave with little to no irritation. Tabac soap and proraso cream (tube & tub) are my favorites so far, but I plan on trying a lot more brands.
I use a Merkur Progress(3rd setting) with Gillette 7 O'Clock Blades(either yellow or black) and found that this combo does a great job for me. As for creams and soaps I have tried a lot of different ones and have found that for me creams work better.
I have recently started learning to shave with a Dovo 5/8" Straight and it seems to be doing a very good job considering my technique is very very lacking.

Doesnt a straight razor require you to pull the skin more than you have too?? i thought if you do that you get ingrown hairs from pulling the skin too far
Switching from DEs to the Trac II really helped my shaves out a lot. A nice tallow soap helps too. I still really like my prairie creations unscented soap; it's my favorite so far and I've tried a lot.
