Antique Store Tuckaway

proxy.php

So This is what I saw in a box tucked in a booth in an antique mall.

I opened it up and it was an empty case... said "Tuckaway" and had no price.

I dug a little in a box of random stuff behind it and lo-and-behold I find the Razor, and the blade bank... and here is what I ended up with.

As you can see, there is some plating loss on the top of the handle, but the head is in great shape. Its gonna go into the ultrasonic cleaner when it gets here and I am looking forward to shaving with it!!

Anyone have any suggestions on cleaning the outside of the case?

On... and I payed 8 bucks for it.. WOO HOO!!!!

That's what it looks like but, even though it's not mine, hoping it's just plate loss.

I'm looking at the high res versions, and there appears to be height to the silver/gray parts. There is also a crack, so I think someone may have tried to solve two problems at once. But I wouldn't mind, because that's history and showed someone really liked this razor and wanted to keep using it.

That, and I'm pretty sure that a brassed gold razor will look like, well, brass. :001_smile

I love these kinds of finds. I found 3 DE razors awhile back at a flea market. Seems like you are more attached to a find like that than to a purchase off of a web site. IMHO

I don't believe its a crack or solder. I think the "crack" you see in the high res pics is where more plating is beginning to "flake" off. At least thats how it appears. I believe its all plating loss... though I could be wrong.

Either way, I can't wait to shave with it!

Lucky bastard!!

After running the blade-box and the razor through an ultrasonic bath, I suggest using an all-purpose metal polishing-paste to gently rub and clean off and polish up all the gunk on the razor and the box and the blade-box. I use a German paste called 'Simichrome' to do this (although I use it on stuff like fountain pen nibs, jewellery and watches). It's strong stuff and you only need a miniscule amount to cover a big area. The results are blindingly amazing.

Well, an easy way to tell is to look at it with a loupe or magnifying glass. If you can see a depression, it's plating loss/a crack. If it's taller than the surrounding material, it's soldered. It may have very well been soldered years before the owner stopped using it, and the solder had worn away from being handled. When you look at it really magnified, you can see the subtle signs that aren't visible to the naked eye.

I say this because recently I got a solid copper Zippo lighter from 1963 that I thought had two or three spots of gunk on it, based on something similar I wiped off the bottom. Turns out that it wasn't all gunk on the surface, it was that the clear coat had been dinged, and there was 30+ years of corrosion that had built up and over the clear coat. In the process of trying to clean it off, I ended up crackling the clear coat, so the lighter isn't as shiny as when I first got it. When I finally looked at it with a 60x loupe I got off eBay, I could see the fine details of the mark(s), and see that it was a depression in the center. If I had done that first, I wouldn't have thought it was tar/adhesive, and ruined the clear coat.
