Antique Razor Hunting

Yesterday was my first foray into trying to find Vintage Gillettes at antique shops. Being from Ohio I figured where better to go but Amish country in southern Ohio. I figured there would have to be a ton of them just lying around at each place I would stop. Now to reality, i was able to find only a few razors and thanks to my brothers on the B&B forums I knew that they were overpriced for their quality. I was equally surprised to find out from one of the Amish guys I was talking to that he doesn't use SE or DE razors, purely a cartridge man for shaving around his beard. I'm figuring either they are still in drawers somewhere, or snapped up by fellow B&B'ers. Any thoughts on the antique store hunting?

Good quality examples are few and far between whether it's antique stores or flea markets. There's a lot of us in on "the hunt".

They are out there though, and rarity makes the finding all the more fun!

There is no comparison to the hope when walking around an antique mall type store and then the fun when there are more than 5 items for your eyes to flash around at. However much like a singles bar when the hottest girl's boyfriend shows up it is rare you take home a real prize.

I live in Columbus and always shop in Northern Ohio (Ashland, Mansfield and Medina). I have had some luck there finding my Schick injectors and a multitude of other razors and mugs. Garage sales are beginning to pop-up. I have found a few items on the cheap at G/Ss.

Antique fairs, peddlers fairs etc in your local area.. Be patient they will come to you with modest hustle. Good luck in your search!

Exactly. While it may take time and effort to make a razor shaveable, nothing can beat the feeling that you helped restore a piece of history.

Be patient and persistent. You'll be surprised! Listen to Rxonmymind, he knows what he's talking about. Lady Luck will be with you!

I can't help you on the patience part! In case you are interested, this is what I keep in my wallet as a guide on my "max values" for vintage scores in the wild:
Add $5 for razors in case or mint. Of course, when something really strikes me or it is a birth year razor, then I can be tempted to up the ante!
