Alum powder/crystals: good as block?

Hi all!

I've been looking around town for an alum block to no avail, seems like I can only find it online or in small towns nowadays. Only thing I could find was some alum powder/crystals, little bigger than salt grains. Can I use them for after shaving as well? Should I apply them directly or dissolve them in hot water and apply the water solution?
