Alcoholic vs Non-Alcoholic Shaving cream and After Shave

Hi,

How to know whether the cream and after shave are alcoholic or not ?

what difference does it make ?

Thanks.

I hate to be Captain Obvious, but the way to find out if a product contains alcohol is to look at the list of ingredients.

Some prefer alcohol in their aftershave for the astringent and others avoid it because it may dry the skin. As for shaving creams, I have never noticed alcohol in one--but I may not be paying attention, as that isn't one of the ingredients that I care about. I only check ingredients to avoid a couple products (lanolin, mostly) that don't agree with my skin.

I see " Benzyl Alcohol" in ingredients. That is the reason I am asking. Does it make difference.

Where as in the below link, I don't see that Benzyl Alcohol.

I'm not expert, but I think when products say "alcohol-free" they mean free of ethanol. There are a slew of various alcohols and they have different characteristics.

Here's another take on Benzyl Alcohol from an organic, everything gives you cancer, website:

I must ask, why is this important to you?

I just started shaving. I came to know that most of the After shave are alcoholic and Alcoholic makes skin dry and hard.

Even The Standard product you liked to has some alcohols. Use a good moisturizer, post shave, and you should be fine. I prefer this one:

But there are a number of alcohol free moisturizers which should combat any residual dryness from your shaving products.

Not all alcohols are drying. The fatty alcohols like cetyl alcohol for example don't dry skin like denatured alcohol can. The alcohols I see used in shaving creams are fatty alcohols.

Dear Capt. Obvious,

Not quite. Col Ichabod Conk "Almond Balm" is a pretty good after shave product. It has no list of ingredients, though I suspect it may contain a SMALL amount of alcohol.

Call me crazy (you wouldn't be the first) but I'm thinking if the presence of alcohol is extremely important to someone, they shouldn't buy products w/o a list of ingredients. As least I wouldn't.
