Aftershave and dry skin

Hey guys, I have a little issue here. A little background (optional reading material) info before my actual question:

I've just started shaving again after two months of just letting it grow (I really haven't had the time because of papers and exams) and I noticed something that never have been an issue before. I'm a flute major at the conservatory and during practising I noticed that my intonation (how "in-tune" each note is by itself - even though the flute is tuned, most of the notes is a little off) was way off! A large part of intonation on flute is done by using both lips to alter the vertical placement of the flute - lifting it adjusts both the pitch and tone quality to fit the high register and, similarly, lowering it does the same for the low register. The dry skin on my face made the flute stick to the skin, making the vertical adjustments impossible to perform. I've just started paying close attention to intonation, so that's probably why I haven't noticed this earlier. This is very important for me, because intonation is a critical component in my exam concert.

I therefore need to know if there's an aftershave that doesn't dry out my skin like this. I used the Nivea Replenishing balm after this shave - it's alcohol free, so I know it isn't that. Are there aftershaves with a moisturizing effect or should I maybe try a separate moisturizer in addition to aftershave?

A few I can think of that are particularly moisturizing are

D.R. Haris After Shave Milk
Saint Charles Shave Sahara aftershave balm
Musgo Real After shave balm ("balsam" as they call it)

If you're skin is really dry you may need a moisturizer as well.

I suffer the same problems with dry skin. Some help I've found:

-- Saint Charles Shave Avocado Oil AS balm
-- Weleda AS balm
-- Trumper's Skin Food (sandalwood is my favorite)
-- Sharps Kid Glove AS gel

On really rough days (cold, dry winter), I make a final shave pass with Pacific Shaving Oil. It's very light, and is the only shave oil of the 20 or so I've tried, that washes off clean. It does, however, leave a nice moisturizing effect on your face.

Sometimes i'll even skip the last pass with razor and just apply Pacific Shaving Oil, then rinse. Magic!

Thanks! Due to availability, pricing and its consistent high moisturizing rating in the reviews section, I've decided to try Musgo Real Aftershave Balm. May post results later.

What soap are you shaving with? I've found that tallow-based soaps leave my skin feeling a lot softer and in better condition that non-tallow ones. Also, a real thin coating of preshave oil before lathering seems to help with dry skin as well.

Proraso s/c. Before I start shaving, I apply the Proraso pre/post cream. I also use a little bit of it when I'm done as well. I have one piece of shaving soap, but since I bought my Kent shaving brush, I stopped using it (I was told that the brush shouldn't be used with soaps). I don't actually remember which soap it was - Mitchell's Wool Fat, maybe?

Pre/post is actually kind of drying, at least as an aftershave, in my opinion. Their liquid cream aftershave (a balm) might be abetter choice for you.

Wrong

It does have alcohol

I have two Nivea after shave balms. One has a blue cap and contains alcohol, while the other has a white cap and is marked "Alcohol/Dye Free".

I use it because of the cooling sensation it gives, but I'll try and leave it out for mye next shave and see if there's a difference.

Yep

The Replenishing (blue) has alcohol, while the white doesn't

Depends on which one

The classis Pre/post can be drying, but the new one, Green Tea and Aloe is nice.

I was referring to the classic pre/post. I'm actually not familiar with the new one. Is the scent similar to the Green Tea and Aloe soap? (OP, sorry to get a little off track!)

Yep, similar scent

No menthol, but stll cooling

A little creamier too.

Sorry OP for the hijack :biggrin1:

Do you know of any other online stores that ship internationally? I usually shop at ........., but they only stock the regular green one. Westcoastshaving has it, but they're out of stock at the moment.

I too have dry skin. This what I do post shave. 1) witch hazel 2) small amount of Avenno lotion 3) afthershave.

By following those three steps I can use any drying aftershave I want. If the aftershave isn't drying I wont do all the steps, but if I am using my beloved Clubman I do.

I have really dry skin too but instead i use a pre-shave oil before shaving. This helps keep the lather from drying out my skin and helps the razor glide. Walmart sells Shave Secret Shaving Oil $2 or you can also use regular cooking Olive Oil. I use olive oil in a spray pump bottle. After i shave i splash with some aftershave and i'm good to go. Or of course you could try balm too.
