Across the Grain?

So when you shave across the grain.... are you shaving nose to ear, or ear to nose?

I started DE shaving ear to nose, but then switched when I saw a straight razor shaving video showing nose to ear. Either way, I'm missing hairs. I find I need to do both. Is this common?

It's common for beard hair to sometimes grow in all sorts of directions. Adjusting shaving patterns is fine, keep practicing. :thumbup1:

Across the grain is a relative term, based on the direction of growth on your face (and it changes many times on the same face!).

That being said, I do one XTG pass in each direction. Some people only do one, and I guess the find out through trial and error which is the most efficient way for them.

I normally go from ear to nose on my XTG pass. But some times I change it up. It is all about what works best for you. I find I get move reduction going from ear to nose that is why I go that direction. I also do a ATG pass after that though, so the XTG is not my last pass.

There is no right way to do it. I believe my XTG pass can be best defined as a half-right echelon swooping hook-back.

But yes, under my chin I need to do XTG in both directions to catch everything.

Thanks alll. Wasn't sure if the way I was doing it was wierd. Guess I'm just as normal as everyone else here in this nuthouse.

I'm sure that whatever way works for you is the correct way to do the XTG. Its not rocket science, and no advanced degree is needed. Just find whatever way gets the job done, and then work on your technique. :thumbup1:

Try it both ways. One of them will cut slightly better than the other way. I usually go from the nose out, but will also run it the other way when I'm going for a serious BBS.
