Acronyms

I accidently found a site that collects the meaning of acronyms: http://www.acronymfinder.com/.

On a whim I typed in BBS just to see if "Baby Butt Smooth" was on the list. There were 250 listings, but our definition of "BBS" was not one of them. There is a place to suggest alternate meanings and I suggested Baby Butt Smooth for BBS. You also have an opportunity to state what your definition means and I said, "Shaving: the online shaving community refers to a close shave as BBS."

I was wondering if the shaving community at large would like to get our definition of BBS added to the list. Maybe if enough of us made that suggestion we'd get it added.

My first impression after joining B&B (which, by the way is another acronym at that site) was, what do all of these abbreviations mean?

Just thought I'd put that suggestion in the hopper. :001_smile

I work in the aviation field (flight training) and am convinced that pilots will make an acronym for anything. Hell, they probably call their kids by their initials :001_smile

The military is the worst offender. I can have a conversation with military folks that would leave civilians with their head spinning.

I grew up with that and used to be quite fluent in acronymrics.

But these days, FWIW, *** IDK.

For Heaven's sake, don't go looking up Belgian Blue Whetstone

My company uses so many achronyms we actually have a database on our intranet to list them all. Ironically, the achronym for the database is CHAOS.

Commonly accepted definitions:

Abbreviation: a string of letters representing the first components from a series of words.
Acronym: an abbreviation generally pronounced as a word (RADAR, LASER; not IRS, FDA)
Initialism: an abbreviation generally not pronounced as a word (IRS, FDA, WHO, USA)

So, BBS is an initialism, not an acronym. In general use, though, the term acronym is more loosely applied.
