A restore for Dad!

Hi chaps,

Here is a pic of my very first brush that I bought some 20 years ago. Some of you might have seen a thread about kiting my Dad out with some wet shaving gear that will be useful for him even though he has Parkinsons.

I have decided on a restore rather than a straight out off the shelf purchase as I think he will appreciate it more.

Anyway, the brush has a 22mm aperture and I want to put a high quality knot in it.

I believe that he will be using shave sticks and then face lathering.

So any recommendations on the knot specifications?

Also do you think I should keep the old mostly faded Vulfix print that is on it or polish the handle?

Cheers

Jase

Jase!! Your awake waaaay to late!!!

I really dig the style of that handle! Would be great seeing it restored!

I know... my 2 year old daughter is teething and keeping me and the Mrs from sleep. I do the hard thing like work out how to spend more money on shaving stuff on the net, while the Mrs gets it all easy by trying to settle the little one :001_tongu

No brainer !! *

20mm Finest Two Band Extra Stuffed set at around 45mm, maybe a bit higher but certainly no more than 50mm.

He'll love it !

Nice going Jase. :001_smile

* The other answer COULD be the Grade A Silvertip but I haven't tried one yet...still trying to find the right handle !!!!

THanks Ian!

What is you feeling on the difference between the Grade A and the Finest? I don't mind dropping the extra $.

Sorry mate haven't tried the Grade A silvertip yet

I have the "normal" TGN Silvertip and I find it too scratchy for me ( though it might soften up a bit if I used it more ).

If my "Hyde Park" with original boar dies soon ( seems to have stopped shedding but the knot is loose ), or I find another nice handle ( bloody hard to find in Aus and some US sellers want $30+ to ship them over ), I intend to try a Grade A Silvertip just for comparison.

I've come close to just ordering an 18mm and 20mm Grade A just in anticipation......

Bang for buck I love the finest, and I'm really just curious as to how much I'll "pickup" going to the Grade A, it's certainly not because I'm unhappy with the finest.

Don't reckon you'd go wrong with either from all reports.

( If you want to order me one when you order your knot and send it down, I'll let you know which one I prefer :tongue_sm )

Hi Ian

I might order one of each LOL, if you want me to order you one no probs if it'll save you a few bucks on US shipping why not.

Lemme know, I'm happy to help if I can?

Cheers

I have to pay ??? :001_rolle

Tempting as it is, as I say, it's just SBAD curiosity driving me. I really don't need another ( number 6 ) brush, especially when I 'm so happy with what I've got.

I'll wait till I find a handle I really want or my Hyde dies

I did try and organise a bulk Aussie buy a while ago ( I think it's only about $1 more for each additional knot you buy ) , and then while I was waiting for responses, the $$ went high and I just ordered 2 for myself that night. Didn't have handles for them at the time either :blushing:

Thanks for the offer anyways Jase, I shall be strong !

I'm really sad. When I find a brush handle, if I don't have a knot I order the knot. I clean up the handle, carefully wrap it and put it in the little toolkit I've got that's got some sandpaper, some polish and some Araldite in it. I take it to work every day in anticipation of the knot arriving..........

Sad huh ! :biggrin1:

I have an 18mm Grade A Silvertip in use. Very nice backbone (set at 42mm), not quite as soft or as wide a bloom as my Best knots.

I have a 20mm Finest awaiting a handle, so I don't have shave experience with it....but...I would go for that knot as it just feels like a real winner.

Set it low.

Hi fellas,

I was thinking about using sikaflex to bond the knot to the handle - what are your thoughts?

And Ian, what Aussie available product do you recommend?

Cheers

Hi fellas,

Hey Jase,

I just use 5 minute Araldite.

I roughen up the knot holder with some sandpaper so it glues better.

I note that some people recommend putting in glue and it actually starts to come out of the knot hole. I don't like this idea because:
1. Not sure what the effect of the glue is on the bristle
2. Don't want to run the risk of glue coming out the top of the knot hole ( and making a mess and ruining the handle finish )
3. Don't want to have to drill out all that glue if I ever decide to reknot.

I just put a small layer on the bottom and a little around the knot holder and place.

This small amount of glue hasn't seemed to have any detrimental effect so far.

Hope this helps :001_smile

Thanks Ian,

THat does indeed help - especially as I have 1/3 tube of this Araldite lying around :001_smile

THanks to all the responses, now just awaiting the knots to finish it up!

okey dokey,

Here is the restore. I have kept the remnants of the old Vulfix logo on the front for prosperity. I emailed Vulfix and they are sending me a couple of new transfers. I intend to place one on the other side to snazz it up a bit for Dad.

The knot is TGN finest 20mm with extra hair, it set it to 47/48mm and it has a great amount of backbone. I gave it a test lather on MWF to start the break-in process for dad. I wont use it as I want him to have the brush as a born again virgin:biggrin1:
