A review from a newbie may seem a bit presumptuous so as the thread title stated please take this as a 1st impression.
The Muhle R89 is obviously a high quality razor and it's fit/finish and workmanship is well documented. BUT to me "the new guy" it rates below the 1960 Gillette "Fat Boy". I have shaved with both of them for 2 weeks and "to me" the FB wins the day.
Why you ask ?
1.) The FB has a larger handle fashioned with deeper knurling resulting in a more sturdy feel in my hand
2.) The FB razor angle is adjustable enabling me to use differing amounts of blade depending on what area of my face I'm shaving.
(I sport a full beard, the adjustments make it easier to trim my neck/cheeks & under my bottom lip).
3.) The FB head is heavier providing less need for me to "press" the razor to my face, the head does the pressing for me.
4.) Noting that the finish on the FB is 52 yrs old and is a bit (a bit) worn, it is still shiny and must have looked brilliant when new.
So I can only image that new for new it would have held it's own vs the 1012 Muhle R89.
Again for the record this is only the 1st impressions of an untrained safety razor rookie. So I'd love to hear your thoughts and experienced perspectives. I'm allowing that with time and safety razor shaving experience I may grow to appreciate what for now are hidden qualities of the Muhle.
