A neat Acquisition

I just acquired a neat piece of shaving history I thought I'd share. A Rhodes Kriss Kross safety razor blade stropper. It also came with the box and the instructions.

These of course don't do anything for modern DE blades as they are much lighter and thinner than older blades from the time when these kinds of stroppers were made. I've got one of these and one of the Twinplex stroppers. They are a neat piece of collectable and I personally don't think any DE shaving collection should be without them.

That's what I thought when I first played with it, the mechanics of flipping the blade over is really neat. For anyone who doesn't know what were talking about, as the handle is turned the round strop spins, then after so many turns the part that is holding the blade lifts up (the position pictured) and flips over to strop the other side. I can take a video if anyone is interested in seeing it in action, just let me know and I'll post a video link.

Here is one specifically designed to hone and strop Eastern Bloc carbon steel blades. In one back and forth cycle of the handle, it hits both sides of both edges. The tiny hone you see is three sided, with two grades of hone and a third side with a little leather strop. I also have the similar "Favorit" machine that operates pretty much the same way. The ASR stainless blade is there just for illustrative purposes cause I don't want to open my GBB and the soviet blade that came in the unit had a corner broken off and I tossed it. Back in the bad old days, I imagine replacement razor blades sometimes were unavailable. The unit probably cost enough that no money was saved by rehoning the blades, but it would keep the shaver shaving when there was a shortage.
